Dear Hari,

The ritual uses the Pancha Pallava or the five types of leaves:

Mango, Vat, Goolar, Neem and Pipal. A water pot containing water

from the Holy Ganges is to be established in the South Western

direction (ruled by Rahu) lording the Amavasya Tithi. The luminaries

are to be worshipped with the Mantra 'Savita' for the Sun

and 'Aapyaayasva' for the Moon. Idols of the luminaries might be

installed in this direction. After the worship, the water is to be

poured over the head of the Jataka and his/ her parents. A Havan is

also recommended along with feeding Brahmins in the BPHS Vol 2.

Please refer to Pt. Sanjay Rath's text Vedic Remedies in Astrology

(VRA) for further details.

I also donated a black cow (Shyama Cow) to a Brahmin along with some

gold (affordable; it can be a small piece).

Pt. Rath advises that for those who cannot do this elaborate ritual,

installing a water pot and worshipping the luminaries might do.

Best Wishes.
