Reading BPHS - Vol 2 chpat 49 by G.S.Sharma he discusses the efficasy of dasa persiods and sites the following: 1. Every planet during the currency of the first half of of it's Mahadasa gives result of the house next to the Ascendent and in the 2nd half of the MD gives reults of the house 2nd from the Asc will be prominent. Question: a. First Half: Isn't the house " next " (ajacent) to the lagna always going to be the 2nd or 12th? So for the first half of the MD all matters for the 2nd ( Wealth, familty, eyes, speach, food, etc) and 12th ( punishment, moksha, pleasures, of the bed, misfortune, bad habits, etc) will arise.... I hae not found this to be the case. b. Second Half: according to G.S.Sharma the 2nd house is prominent, yet point A above compensates for " houses next to the ascendent. " What Am I missing? I find the commentary convoluted... RATH: VOLUTED IS A SOFT TERM. ITS ABSURD..THE REFERENCE IS TO THE SIGNS OWNED BY THE PLANETS (IN CASE3 OF TWO SIGN OWNERSHIP)..WHY ARE THE LUMINARIES & NODES TO BE EXCLUDED SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE COMMENTARY ONLY IF THE TRANSLATION WAS DONE WITH A PROPER APPLICATION OF MIND. 2. The 4 th Mahadasa( MD) from birth, if happened to be Sani, or 6th MD from birth happened to be Guru, or 5th Mahadasa fom birth happened to be Rahu or Mars , become unfavorable even if the planet is benefit of yogakaraka. QUESTION: why is this? e.g. is this so, and has anyone experienced this? RATH: THERE IS A SOUND LOGIC PROVIDED WE KNOW WHERE TO START.. NOW THAT YOU ALL KNOW HOW TO START VIMSOTTARI, YOU MUST THINK ABOUT THE REAL EFFECT OF THE GRAHA'S IN THAT DASA.. thoughts on this? Guest guest
I can agree with 4th dasa of saturn being unfavourable. This will happen for all born in the nakshatra of mars - Mrgasirsha, Chitra, Dhanishta. I (Dhanishta nakshatra) had a serious health issue in the maha dasa of saturn and it has generally been more difficult. However, as saturn is in the 4th, rules the 8th and 9th and aspects the ascendant, this should perhaps not be surprising. A friend born in Chitra is running saturn dasa now. She has had some financial losses during this time. Saturn rules the 2nd and 3rd and is placed in the 12th, so again this should not be surprising. I do not know of anyone born in Mrgasirsha off the top of my head. - Frank in Austin varahamihira Sunday, May 27, 2001 7:10 PM [Jaya Jagannath] Dasa Periods Namaste. Guest guest
Namaste Frank, At 11:10 AM 5/27/01 -0700, you wrote: Namaste. I find the commentary convoluted... The first instance above, the house " next " to the ascendant can only be the 12th therefrom, and not the 2nd. Logic leads one to believe this to be the case, since the results of the latter half of the dasa period are judged from affairs related to the second from the ascendant. You may not find the logic behind every statement of BPHS, and in fact some will appear contradictory. So, from that point, research into such dasas as listed above in particular charts is needed, in order to ferret out the efficacy of these statements, or otherwise. Guest guest
Om Krishnaaya Namah Hi Frank, The first principle you mention is an excellent thumb-rule with regards to timing the fructification of certain effects within a dasa. Apart from the luminaries and the nodes, each planet owns two houses, and during a planet's dasa, effects relating to both houses are felt. According to this thumb-rule, the first half of the dasa will give results related to the first house that planet owns, and the second half will give results related to the planet's second house. For example, say you have a Gemini Lagna chart, Jupiter owns the seventh and tenth. So, the first eight years of Jupiter Mahadasa will give effects predominently related to the seventh house, and the last eight years will give results relating to the tenth house. So essentially one is able to narrow down one's expectations. Obviously these thumb-rules are not superior to antardasa analysis etc., but with Vimsottari dasas it is often found to be useful. So if for example you expect a person to marry in Jupiter dasa for this Gemini Lagna chart, then instead of choosing all possible marriage antardasas, you can look for those which occur in the first eight years so you're list will be shorter. Obviously once this is done you can go through the antardasas and see which coincide with favourable transits, nice progressions and Varshaphala, other dasas etc. Another use might be this. Say you have, for example, a Cancer Lagna chart, and Venus (who rules the eighth and eleventh) participates in a dharma-karma-adhipati-yoga, with Jupiter, the ninth Lord. Then you may expect raja-yoga effects to be more strongly felt in the first half of Venus dasa rather than the second, as it is Venus's Lordship over a kendra (the fourth) that creates the yoga, not the eleventh. I find this principle remarkably useful for Vimsottari dasa (and antardasas) although I haven't yet tried it much with other graha dasas. Hope this helps, Pursottam
