Soul, Guna and Rebirth

Dear Vijay!

You wrote.....

I just read you mail (modifying results). Your argument is fine. But, then it has a potential to rise hot descussions. Let me elaborate. You say that the chance of birth in different casts may not be just chance. But, then CASTE as it was in older days was not really fixed by birth. There were some exceptions. Visvamitra, Jada Bharata, Valmiki, etc. were classic examples. Then if a soul wanted to be a warrier (Viswamitra), why did it turn brahmin? Is not a soul nirguna? How can Soul have preferences or desires?

_______________

My understanding!

This is true that the caste of a person is not fixed with the birth but with the karma he performs in this world. Before getting into this debate lets take up some more fundamental question, why one takes birth in a particular situation (family, caste, surroundings etc etc.....).The cause of birth on this earth is desire. Human beings have the desire to enjoy the material pleasure and hence get attracted towards earth... and attached towards the earthly things. Hence, unless the soul gets detached from the material pleasures, he frequents the earth with births after deaths. Here the question arise, how the soul would get detached from the material pleasures and attain moksha. This happens when the soul fulfills all his desires and exhaust his wishes. For this the soul takes birth in the situation and surruoundings where the desires can be fulfilled.

There are other factors which also influence the soul's birth is the Karma he had done in the previous birth and the results he had to reap for that. However, all these things are interrelated. I will state this afterwards.

In Gita you might read that the soul takes birth according to his last wish when he is dying. This is illustrated with life of Buddha as a bodhisattwa. Once Bodhisatwa went to a Jungle to do tapasya and got attached to a baby deer and while he was dying he thought that "what would happen to the deer after he dies". Because he was thinking of the deer, he took birth as a deer in the nest birth. In the next birth as a deer he realised his mistake and tried to be detached and in the next birth, he again born as a bodhisattwa.

But how this last desire come. This last thinking is influenced by the your nature (prakriti), your desires and also guided by the karma (through divine providence).

Continuing with same logic If someone is a renunciate, where should he take birth so that he has higher likelihood of getting the opportunity to complete his sadhana? It must be a Brahmin's home. Similarly if someone has a desire to rule over others (his karma permit too), where he should take birth? It must be a kings home or a place where he get the opportunity to become a king.

Thus there is a higher likelyhood that a brahmin by karma is a brahmin by birth and so on. There might be exceptions as so with other rules too. This might happen when a brahmin's soul get the opportunity for realisation based on other situations and not only his birth or some soul who takes birth to establish some truth or come with a mission.

The caste system however, doesn't make anyone small or great. This was a mechanism to distribute the work in a society so that the society runs well. Also birth on one caste doesn't stop one to perform karma of other caste............

If you wish you can forward this to vedic astrology and varahamihira lists.

Hope I am clear

Sarajit
