A Doctor at Harvard Medical School Recommends Mantra Meditation for Stress

Relief Age-old techniques from the east are gaining respect in modern medicine

for stress management. In 1976, Herbert Benson, M.D. Professor at Harvard

Medical School, coined the term " relaxation response " , to describe the

healthful condition induced by meditation.

 

The " relaxation response " produced lower heart rates, slower breathing and lower

blood pressures. It was recommended as an antidote to the " fight or flight "

In his latest book, Dr.Benson asserts that meditation on religious words is the

most healing of all techniques. Dr. Benson explains, that humans are the only

species who are aware of their own mortality, and that this awareness causes

anguish that threatens their ability to survive. To cope with this anguish,

" humans are wired for God, " therefore by focusing on spiritual words they

can achieve deep healing changes within the body and mind. (Timeless Healing,
