Respected Sanjayji and others,

Excuse me for the delayed response, but I've been trying to locate Raphael's Tables ( as suggested by Sanjayji ), but without success.

My question regarding Ayanamsa was:

"Are the Ascendant values given in Lahiri's Tables of Ascendants, Sayan or Nirayan ?"

I am now sure that these values are NEITHER ! (Please don't laugh - yet !)

I am fully convinced that Lahiri merely took the Vernal Equinox for the year 1938 and reduced this longitude by 23 degrees ( at 50.28" per year for 1938-285=1653 years ). He then accepted (and presented us ) the resultant longitude as the 1st point of Aries ( or Ashwini ), i.e. the beginning of the Fixed or Sidereal Zodiac.

Lahiri himself candidly admits this in the Preface to the First Edition published in 1947, when he says that, "As all the published tables are on the Sayan basis, the students of the Nirayana system of Astrology were really in need of a Nirayana equivalent of those tables, and the present endeavour is only to meet this demand."

But does this not imply that although we make all predictions on the basis of the Nirayana ( or Fixed ) Zodiac, we have no way of establishing its first point, other than depending on the Vernal Equinox, i.e. the beginning point of the Sayan ( or Tropical ) Zodiac, which we otherwise denounce as irrelevant and unworthy of use in Astrology !

This is somewhat akin to having a lame horse pulling our cart - but although the horse moves in jerks, we insist that the movement of our cart is as smooth as can be !

If this isn't a Catch-22 situation, what is ?
