A question please - is there any way the rishis mentioned to tell when Mercury/Venus turn retrograde? Nowadays we look at an ephemeris. Back then they must have had other methods. Mars / Jupiter etc is easy. Simply judge from the Sun. Not so with the first two. Actually it is quite easy for these two planets, because they change direction at the aphelion or the point of their orbit which is the most distant from the Sun. So the maximum angular distance of Venus from the Sun is 47 degrees of arc, and for Mercury it is 29 degrees. These are the points where they change direction from direct to retrograde or the other way around. The other factor that should be noted that the direct/retrograde cycles of Venus and Mercury are regular in respect to the Sun's motion, so it's also aesy to calculate them from this factor. Actually it is said that the Maharishis didn't even use ephemeris tables, which are in fact also compiled on the basdis of observation and coputations. Rahter they had psecific formulae from the Rg Veda I think, which allowed the to calculate the position of the planets at any given time and place.
