***Jaya Jagannath***Dear shiv & sagar

That answer from shiv will not help.

1. Start with Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra. This is the most fundamental book. The sanskrit given in the book is not the original from Parasara as the sanskrit used by Parasara in the Rig Veda is very difficult and ancient. The sanskrit used here is of recent origin and is probably the work of a learned Pundit from Uttar Pradesh who went from one village to another and tried to collect the stanzas from different families so that he could organise them as a whole for his students. such is the greatness of the Guru's of those Himalayas. read this and master it. try to remember every stanza by heart. Then proceed to the next.

2. Brihat Jataka of Varahamihira is very good and is vey simple in the face of it, and is the only most authentic work which refers to the ancients. Varahamihira was a strict follower of the tradition and this helps resolve small riddles that could remain if BPHS is read without a Guru. Sri Sooryanarain rao the illustrious grandfather of Dr Raman is the best translator so far.

3. Saravali of Kalyan Verma is the first serious step into divisions and other aspects of conception, Moola dasa should be learnt from here.

4. Jataka Parijatha is yet another masterpiece that I adore refer to even today. It is too deep and will take many years to really fathom properly. Every sutra has many underlying meanings and implications.

5. Sarvartha Chintamani of Vyankatesh sarma should be read next and this is the deepest work on Divisions.

6. Upadesa Sutra of Maharishi Jaimini is the greatest work in this series and is too deep even for one who is recognised as having some expertise in this area.

Thereafter you will know Jyotish..at least horoscopy or Jataka...

Phaladeepika, Hora Ratnam, Bhavartha Ratnakara, and other books should be read to grasp the principles and not with the intention of quoting as we do for Parasara.

Books like Prasna Marga, Krishneeyam etc are a must for Prasna and Brihat Samhita are very important for mundane. Sankaracharya was right. There is no end to the ocean. Just keep swimming with the faith that one day you will see land.

Dear Sagar,

1) Brihat Parashar Hora shastra4) Jataka Parijata

Verses of these two are composed in simple easy-to-remember and understand Sanskrit.

Best wishes
