Dear Lingam,

You have brought a very common problem among couples these days (and still the population grows!!). There are some clear steps in examining such cases and I am delinating them as below:

How to check fertility and give remedies

Step-1: Examine the Putra Bhava (Fifth House)

(a) Examine the fifth house & lord from lagna - the fifth house is Taurus a fruitless sign but not malefic and is unoccupied. There is no Graha Drishti (planetary sight) on it showing the absence of a strong enough internal desire. However many planets aspect through rasi drishti showing that this can be fruitful in future. The aspect of the nodes Saturn and Mars is not very desirable and that of the eunuch Mercury is no better. The fifth Lord is Venus and this conjoins the eighth lord Sun and functional malefic Jupiter. However, the conjunction of the lord of a Bhava (here 5th lord Venus) with the Karaka (Jupiter) is very desirable showing that remedial measures will work provided the Karaka is activated.

(b) Examine the fifth house & Lord from the Navamsa lagna - The fifth house in Navamsa is Cancer with the Badhakesh Mercury in it showing some obstruction to the easy childbirth. This is all the more terrible as Mercury is between Ketu and Venus with the latter as the eighth lord. The Graha drishti of saturn promises delay and some sorrow in this regard. The Lord of the fifth house is the Moon placed in the sixth from it in a Jupiterian sign holding promise for this house. Unfortunately Moon has the Graha Drishti of venus showing that the desire shall be intense and cause some sorrow as mentioned earlier that Venus is the eighth Lord.

Step-2: Check the Santana Tithi

This facility was earlier available in Jagannath Hora but seems to be missing now. Can someone check?

Santana Tithi is obtained by multiplying the Janma Tithi by FIVE and expunging multiples of 360 Degrees. At the time of Birth 13.91% of the Tithi was left.

Multiply this to the Tithi span of 12 degrees to get the Tithi balance as : 1.6692 Degrees (i.e. 12 X 0.1391 = 1.6692). Thus, the Tithi covered = 12 - 1.6692 = 10.3308 Degrees.

Now, since the birth is is Ekadasi, ten tithi's have been completed. So, add 10 X 12 = 120 degrees to this to get 130.3308 degrees as Janma Tithi Sphuta.

To obtain Santana Tithi Sphuta, simply multiply this by 5 and expunge multiples of 360 degrees.

Thus, 130.3308 X 5 = 651.654 Degrees and expunging multiples of 360 degrees, we get

Santana Tithi Sphuta = 651.654 - 360 = 291.654 Degrees

Divide the Santana Tithi Sphuta by 12 to get the Santana Tithi.

Thus, 291.654 / 12 = 24.3045 . This indicates that the Santana Tithi is the 25th Tithi (i.e. always round off the result of 24.3045 to the next higher integer). Sukla Paksha is from 1 to 15 and so, removing 15 Tithi from this we get 10 as the remainder (25 -15 = 10). Thus, the Santana Tithi is Krishna Paksha Dasami. In the Krishna Paksha the Moon is strong only till the 5th and some Tithi Dosha are indicated requiring suitable remedial measures as given in the standard texts.

Step 3: Check the Physical ability to bear children

This is seen from the Arudha Pada of 3rd house from Lagna and the seventh i.e. the arudha pada of the third house (A3) and the ninth house (A9) as the third house has to with the physical act of mating for the purpose of having children. A3 with four planets is stronger than A9. A3 is very badly placed in Capricorn in the 12th house from the SUN indicating DOSHA or flaw in this regard. In addition it is afflicted by terrible malefics Saturn & Mars and is also conjoined MERCURY. Thus the physical ability is very low and medical intervention maybe required. It maybe noted that of the two Arudha A3 & A9, only one is ill placed thereby indicating the possibility of success through appropriate medical / Ayurveda support.

Step 4: Check the ability of the Atma.

This is seen from the Arudha of the third house and ninth house from the Sun. We call them AS3 & AS9. The Sun is in the second house in aquarius and the third from it is Aries as the ninth from it is Libra. The Arudha of Aries is in Cancer and the Arudha of Libra is in Gemini. Cancer is stronger than Gemini to give results. Cancer is in the 6th house from the SUN indicating DOSHA or flaw in this regard. The Atma is weak to sustain another and the pregnancy even if occuring will fail repeatedly. It maybe noted that of the two Arudha AS3 & AS9, only one is ill placed thereby indicating the possibility of success through appropriate remedial measures.

Step 5: Saptamsa

The presence of Venus in the Saptamsa Lagna is undesirable. Graha Malika Yoga is initiated by the 6th Lord (Child killer) Saturn from its exaltation in Libra but fortunately is ended by the fifth Lord Jupiter. Thus, once again the fifth Lord and Karaka Jupiter holds the key to success, but does indicate the possibility of a daughter.

Step 6: Fifth house from Karaka - Jupiter

The fifth house from the Karaka in the Rasi chart is Gemini and its Lord, being a natural benefic is placed in the eighth from Gemini in Capricorn. This is a serious flaw requiring some amount of remedial measure else there may not be any children, and those born may suffer. This is the planet given the responsibility of bringing children. Mercury in the second drekkana indicates KRISHNA.

Ista Devata is Ganapati. So, after bowing to Ganeshji with the Mantra "OM NAMO UCCHISTA GANESHAYA HASTI PISACHI LIKHE SWAHA", she should worship Krishna with the mantras given for Santana Gopal in the book Vedic remedies in Astrology. Visit to Jagannath at Puri and bathing in the sea before entering the temple is advised. For the Sun, I will suggest worship of the form of Bhagavan for the given Month. As an exercise, check the names of the 12 solar months that were used since vedic times and give the Mantra for Kumbha Maasa.
