Guest guest
Namaste, If somebody is formally educated in linguistics, one will realize that Sanjay and I have been misusing the word " phoneme " . This word in modern linguistics is used for a sound at the lowest level (e.g. /a/, /i/, /k/, /p/ etc). The sound " pa " , for example, is not one phoneme, but a combination of two phonemes (p and a). But it is one akshara or syllable. Both Sanjay and I have used " phoneme " in the sense of akshara (e.g. pa, pla, om, ke etc). A more appropriate English word for this would be syllable, but I continued the word phoneme as Sanjay used it. All the discussion remains the same, but those who know what exactly phoneme means should realize that we used the word in a different sense - that of a syllable or akshara. I am sending this mail to avoid confusion if somebody knows the correct meaning. May Jupiter's light shine on us, Narasimha
