Guest guest
Dear List, I forgot to mention that while some like the Mantra Maharnava do not count the OM, most upanishadic and puranic texts do. For example, in the Surya Upanishad, it is clearly stated that Om ghrini surya-aditya is an ashtakshari and Om is definitely counted. Similarly in Bhagavat Purana, Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya is clearly indicated as a dwadasakshari, Om Namo Narayanya as an ashtakshari. The Devi saptashati declares the navarna mantra of Chamunda as a navakshari. So most classical texts seem to count the Om while counting the aksharas.
