Please install Translit 98 to view to the slokas correctly. I am attaching the font here with for those who don't have it. ______ Text 3.4.2 upagraha yukte þrŸmanta× || Translation Even an Upagraha placed in it (ninth from Arudha Lagna) gives wealth and property. Purport The Upagrahas are basically certain degrees of the Zodiac calculated for the moment of birth. They are nine in numbers lorded by the nine planets from the Sun to Ketu and produce very distressful results. Calculation of Upagrahas Jataka Parijata upagraha bh˜numukhagrah˜Õþ˜ k˜l˜daya× kaÿ÷aphalaprad˜× syu | kramaþa× k˜laparidhidh¨m˜rdhaprah˜r˜hay˜ yamakaõ÷akakodaõýam˜ndip˜topaketava× || These are the Kala, Paridhi, Dhuma, Ardhaprahara, Yamakantaka, Kodanda, Mandi, Patha and Upaketu, belonging to the Sun etc. respectively. The following table gives the calculation of the Upagrahas. For Mandi, Yamakantaka, Ardhaprahara and Kala, the ascendant for the rising time after Sunrise (for day birth) or sunset (for night birth) has to be calculated. The rising time is for a 12 hour day/night and should be proportionately increased/decreased if the day/night is longer/shorter. Upagraha Rising in Hours* Upagraha Day Birth Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Mandi Arudha Prahara Yama Kantaka Kala D N D N D N D N 10:24’ 4:00 5:36’ 10:24’ 7:12’ 0:48’ 0:48’ 5:36’ 8:48’ 2:24’ 4:00 8:48’ 5:36’ 10:24’ 10:24’ 4:00 7:12’ 0:48’ 2:24’ 7:12’ 4:00’ 8:48’ 8:48’ 2:24’ 5:36’ 10:24’ 0:48’ 5:36’ 2:24’ 7:12’ 7:12’ 0:48’ 4:00 8:48’ 10:24’ 4:00 0:48’ 5:36’ 5:36’ 10:24’ 2:24’ 7:12’ 8:48’ 2:24’ 10:24’ 4:00 4:00 8:48’ 0:48’ 5:36’ 7:12’ 0:48’ 8:48’ 2:24’ 2:24’ 7:12’ *Rising time to be increased/decreased proportionally and added to Sun rise/Sun set. Dhuma = Sun (Long) = 133o20’ Vyatipat (or Pata) = 360o – Dhuma (Long) Paridhi + 180o + Pata (long) Chapa (or Kodanda) = 360o – Paridhi (long) Upketu = 16o40’ + Chapa (Long). Calculation of Gulika Gulika is an Upagraha and is called the child of Saturn. The day duration is divided into 8 parts (called Yama) and, beginning from the weekday lord, in the sequence of the days of the week, each planet owns one part. The eight part is owned by Gulika. Thus, Gulika is the ascendant for the time ending the part ruled by Saturn. For example on a Wednesday (day birth), Saturn owns the 4th part. If the day duration was exactly 12 hours and the Sunrise at exactly 6 a.m., Gulika would rise at the end of the fourth part i.e. 12 ´ 4/8 = 6 hrs after Sunrise or 12:00 Noon. Table (1.19) gives the ready reckoner for calculating Gulika. The additional information required would be the Sunrise/Sunset and Day/Night duration depending on day/night birth. Table 1.19: Gulika determination Weekday Part of Saturn Ending time of Saturn for 12 hr day Part of Saturn Ending time of Saturn for 12 hr night Day Birth Night Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 10:30’+SR 9:30’+SR 7:30’+SR 6:00’+SR 4:30’+SR 3:00’+SR 1:30’+SR 3 2 1 7 6 5 4 4:30’+SS 3:00’+SS 1:30’+SS 10:30’+SS 9:00’+SS 7:30’+SS 6:00’+SS Let us take a hypothetical case of birth on a Thursday; Sun Rise: 5:42’ a.m. and day Duration Hr 12:36’ Time of Gulika rising = S.R. + [(4:30’) ´ Day Duration’) ¸ 12] = (5:42’) + [(4:30’) ´ (12:36’) ¸12] = 10: 25’: 30” a.m. Now determine the ascendant for the place for birth at 10:25’: 30” a.m. This is Gulika. ________________________________ I hope it helps With Best Regards Sarajit - "Swee Chan" <swee <vedic astrology > Thursday, January 23, 2003 2:32 AM RE: [vedic astrology] 9th bhava from Arudha Lagna--For Sanjayji > Jaya Jagannatha> Dear Sanjayji,> > Also know upagrahas to work like Saturn.
