Dear Rao,

I am posting here, some information I compiled long back. Probably this can be of some use to you. This shall be a little addition to what Ramadas and Visti have written.

Best Wishes

Sarajit

The following aspects of the Nakshatras shall be discussed:

Deity: The mythology associated with the deities tell a lot about these nakshatras for example, it is known that the lord of Ashwini are the two ashwini kumaras, who ride on horses and one of them is well versed in warcraft and another one is good in Jyotish Shatra. Knowing this, we can understand whomto worship if we want to strenthen the planets placed in those nakshatras and also to get the benefit of those things ruled by the Deity such as warcraft and Jyotish.

Desires: Each Nakshatra reflects certain wishes or desires that those who born under them are inclined to have. In the Vedas each Nakshatra deity reflects these wishes, that those who worship this deity and its Nakshatra will gain. This material comes from the Taittiriya Brahmana III.1.4. It affords additional insight on the Nakshatras and their meaning.

Guna: This indicate the prevelant disposition of the nakshatra, whether, Sattva or Rajasa or Tamasa. Sattva means the state of knowledge and bliss, the state of eternal bliss, or the state of changelessness. Rajas mean activity and growth while Tamas means ignorance, inactivity and death.

Nature: The predominant activity of the nakshatra can be understood from the nature of the nakshatra. If the nature is fierce, then the activity shall be war, victory and such things; whereas if it is movable, then the activity could be changing places, relocation etc.

Gana: There are three Ganas Deva, Manusya and Rakshasa. The Devagana represent upholding truthfulness and righteousness, the manusya gana represent the ability to live and grow using practical means, while rakshasa gana represents breaking the conventional things and moving against the long cherished beliefs.

TriMurthi: All activities can be classified with creation, sustenance and destruction. These three predominant activity of the nature is associated with Brhama, the creator; Vishu, the Sustainer and Shiva, the destroyer. Thus the nakshatra representing Brahma, indicate creation and creative forces, Vishnu's nakshatra represents preserving somethng already whereas Shiva's nakhatras have the forces of dissolution of the material things, so that the creative process can start again.

Activity: There are three groups of nakshatras based on the activity, Active, Passive and the Balanced one. The active nakshatra have more initiative and drive to act, the passive ones are more receptive and react to the environment as and when such need arise, whereas the Balanced one, as the name suggest becomes active or passive based on the need.

Ayana: There are four major ayanas (Goals) of human life, Dharma - To fulfil the duties and obligations through righteous means, Artha - To earn and live a comfortable life, Kama - To fulfill our desires and Moksha - To become free of the material forces and leave this material world.

Body Parts: The body parts are extremely useful in diagnosis of diseases in Medical astrology. The placement of malefics or disease givers in such a nakshatra can cause diseases in those organs of body, ruled by the afflicted nakshatra.

Dosha: There are three doshas in Ayurveda, the vata, kapha and pitta. This is also useful in medical astrology.

Profession: These can provide insight on the professions one might be inclined to.

Miscellaneous Articles: This is used in various places such as for knowing the material possessions one has or one is interested in amassing etc.

Mantra (From VRA): The deities of the birth constellation are regularly worshipped. Sometimes, the deities of other constellations are also worshipped for specific results. For example, during an eclipse the deity of the constellation where the eclipse occurs is worshipped. Two mantras are indicated against each constellation. The first is a Gayatri/Mala-mantra and the second is the Beeja Mantra. The overlordship of Nakshatra is given to the Moon, who is the sustainer in this world like the compassionate mother. Thus regular worship of the deities of the birth constellation, keeps protects one from the troubles in this world.
