If you read Shreemat Bhagavad Gita, Shree Bhagavan mentions " Yadaa yadaa hi dharmasya, glanir bhavata bharata, abhyuthanaam adharmasyam, tadaatmaanam srijamyaham " ...means, O Bharata, whenever the religion is affected, only then adharma rises & spreads all over, & during this time, i take birth for what??? " Paritraanaaya sadhunam, binaashaaya cha dushkritaam, dharmasamsthaapanaarthaaya sambhavaami yuge yuge " for saving the holy men & for destroying the evil-doers, i take birth again n again for re- establishing the Dharma " . As per the initial puran texts, it mentions of 10 avatars,in Shreemat Bhagavatam, 24 avatars have been mentioned,however, through this statement of Shree Bhagavan (who himself is considered to be a Purna Avatara) & as per Devi Bhagatam " Avatar hyasamkheyaa " ...the avatars in this world are countless.
