I have little knowledge in this so I reply to your question.

Upa_vasam means renunciation of Karmic *(foods that is preapred and cooked).

while " upavas " u should avoid taking foods cooked by others. Here you may get

doubt that if you prepare foods yourself shall I continue taking food on upvas

days. No because I am coming to say phal har means naturally available foods.

Even that a phalhar*(fruits) peeling, cutting done by anybody else, should be

avoided.

" Vrata " means on specific days for some Kamyarth, with SANKALP OF number of

days or counts, you observe. For Vrat for specific purpose it carries

restriction and imposed or explained by Guru or pandit.

Generally on Trayodashi you can observe upavash. Whether it is " upavash " or

" Vrat " you observe silence *(not speaking much). Ekadasi vrat is having separate

set of rules.

If any clarification needs you can ask me in this.

The purpose of Vrat or Upavash

to clean our digestive system and an opportunity created to dislodge

impurities in our body system, in the name of GOD..
