KEY WEST, Florida (CNN) -- Tropical Storm Ernesto

shifted toward the northwest Monday, putting it on a possible track for

landfall in South Florida by Tuesday or Wednesday, forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch for

hundreds of miles of Florida coastline, stretching from New Smyrna Beach on the

Atlantic, around the tip of the peninsula and north to Chokoloskee on the Gulf

of Mexico.

A hurricane watch remained in place for all of the Florida

Keys from Ocean Reef to the Dry Tortugas, meaning that hurricane conditions

are possible within the area generally within 36 hours.

Officials said the state emergency operations center in Tallahassee

is in " full-scale activation " and preliminary evacuations of mobile

homes already are under way in the Florida Keys.

To the south, Ernesto raked Cuba with 40 mph (72 kph)

winds and heavy rain. But the storm was expected to strengthen as it crossed

the Florida Straits and could regain hurricane status.
