Ecuador

road crash kills dozens

Many bodies were

recovered from the scene of the crash

At

least 47 people, among them 17 children, have been killed in a bus crash on a

mountain road near the Ecuadorean capital, Quito.

The bus overturned along a steep, winding road in what officials

say is the country's worst accident in

years.

Only five of the 52 people on the bus survived the crash. The

five, all children, are in hospital.

The accident happened near the village of Papallacta, 45km (27

miles) from the Latin American country's capital.

The passengers are believed to be family members and friends who

had hired the bus for an outing, a police spokesman said.

They were apparently returning to their homes in the community

of Amaguana, 10 miles (16 km) south of Quito.

" Due to excess speed, the driver lost

control of the bus and it turned over, " the spokesman,

Patricio Quimso, told the Associated Press.

Television footage shows children's' bodies on the

side of the road.

The blind curves on the mountain roads of the Andes, combined with

poorly maintained vehicles, mean that crashes are common.
