Astronauts wired for Saturday spacewalk

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) -- After many unsuccessful attempts to coax a half-retracted solar wing on the international space station to fold up properly, NASA now plans to send two spacewalkers over to inspect it on Saturday.

Astronauts Robert Curbeam and Sunita Williams, scheduled to perform the last of three planned spacewalks of the space shuttle Discovery mission, will head over if their main rewiring task is successful and completed with time to spare.

" We're currently envisioning this as an inspection task. How much and what you could touch and what kind of good it could do is still very much under discussion, " Mission Control astronaut Steve Robinson radioed up to the crew.

Robinson also said a back-to-back spacewalk is not an option, so if NASA were to decide to send astronauts out on a fourth walk to manually help the wing fold, it would be Monday at the earliest.

NASA suspects a guide wire in the wing is stuck.

On Friday, NASA asked an astronaut aboard the space station to exercise vigorously, hoping the movement would jostle the wing into place.

But several attempts by German astronaut Thomas Reiter of the European Space Agency to vibrate wires on the 115-foot solar array failed.
