GILROY,

Calif. -- Authorities in Gilroy continued

their investigation Tuesday into a mysterious accident in which a small plane

crashed into a sewage pond at a wastewater treatment plant Monday afternoon.

Investigators said they are

still unsure what caused the plane to go down and how many people were on

board.

The plane remained under 20

feet of raw sewage Tuesday morning, and the process of draining it could take

hours, officials said.

Authorities added that although

the plane has not been positively identified, they believe it could be one that

was reported missing Monday from a San Jose flight school. That plane was

carrying three people.
