Thanks again John! Hi Jorge & Cosmologer There are two contradictory anecdotal histories of this event for the ground marker ceremony, the cornerstone placed at the foundation site's northeast corner of the to-be-erected Bangkok Royal Palace: [1] One tale has it that the marker was ceremonially placed at 54 minutes after sunrise (dawn) on April 21, 1782. [2] The other tale has it that Rama I instructed that the marker be placed at 15 minutes after midnight, 00:15 hrs on April 21, 1782. Take your pick: Tale #1 or Tale #2. Now an added complication: Determining how the time moment of sunrise was measured that day remains an open question. Sunrise surely was earlier than 06:00 hrs, but how much earlier?. Then there are yet other complications. King Rama I ascended to the throne two weeks earlier, on April 6, 1782, at the moment he personally took a club and bludgeoned to death his predecessor [no assassins need apply]. His ascension should not be confused with his subsequent coronation, which ceremony was held some two months later, in early June 1782. And yet, we are to believe that the birth of the modern Thai nation [actually, the modern Siamese Nation] was actuated by the Bangkok Palace construction's groundbreaking ceremony which also happens to have been the commemorating event for the birth of the City of Bangkok. Birth of the CITY[?]; Birth of the NATION[?] . . . .Place your bets, ladies and gentlmen; which is it ?. Good Luck on this one. As actor Yul Brenner spoke the lines of King Rama IV in the stage and film Rogers & Hammerstein musical, THE KING AND I, some 50 years ago: quote " Such is a puzzlement " unquote. Yes ... A PUZZLEMENT !!!! On Sunday of the sixth month, khUn " sip'kam " the 10th day of the rising moon period), at 15 minutes after midnight, the City's pillar was erected. The date is translated to the western calendar as April 21, 1782. http://www.faqs.org/faqs/thai/culture/ - Thailand was a conglomeration of many city-states. -The Bangkok period (from the mid-18th century until the present day) saw the Thais rise from their devastated kingdom and re-build the country into a modern state. http://www.geocities.com/ye_md310/thais/nationth.htm - King Rama I, Pounder of the present Chakri Dynasty, was himself an accomplished astrologer. He personally calculated the 'rerk' or auspicious date and time for the raising of Bangkok's 'Lak Muang' or City Pillar which marked the official founding of the capital — 6.54 a.m. on April 21st, 1782. - Jao Phraya Chakri took over the leadership on 6th April 1782 which eventually became Chakri Dynasty Day and the coronation took place on 10th June 1782. He built the new capital opposite Thouburi. - King Rama I passed away on September 7, 1809 at the age of 72. - 1833 Mar 20, the United States and Siam (now Thailand) concluded a commercial treaty in Bangkok. - 1868 Oct 1, Rama IV, [Phra Chomklao Chaoyuhua], died at 63. - King Vajiravudh passed away on November 26, 1925 - On March 2, 1934 the King abdicated and later died in exile, leaving the throne to his nephew, King Ananda Mahidol.
