According to the Committee for Rattanakosin Bicentennial Celebration to Commemorate the Rattanakosin Bicentennial who jointly authored the book,THE CHAKRI MONARCHS AND THE THAI PEOPLE: A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP [1982, the English title as given by the authors themselves], after King Rama the First took the throne from King Taksin, on April 6, 1782, Rama I's first dynastic building task was to establish a new site for his kingdom’s capital city [the future Bangkok], the center of which city was to be his Chakri Grand Palace. On Sunday of the sixth month, khUn"sip'kam"(the 10th day of the rising moon period), at 15 minutes aftermidnight, the Chakri Grand Palace's northeast corner pillar was erected. This event constituted the Thai equivalent of the Masonic groundbreaking ceremony for the erection of the Royal Palace. The date is translated to the western calendar as April 21, 1782. The source of this information has the credibility that Nicholas Campion's lacks. Hope

this radix yields solid predictive value for SAMVA. My best wishes to Jorge and Cosmologer for their exploration of this problematic question in Thai history and astrology. In contemporary Thailand the importance of the spiritual realm is still very much alive in Bangkok's public life. Go to any town or city in Thailand and witness the great care accorded to the preservation of the City Pillar, the "lak muang". In keeping with long tradition, all Thai cities have a

pillar (lak muang) driven into the ground to mark the community's cosmic center point, and to provide a doorway for their guardian spirits. There remains the strongly held belief that all heavenly influences and spiritual energies flow through the city's pillar and out into the community at large; consequently it regularly attracts crowds of worshippers. The Bangkok city pillar is still believed by many people to have the power of granting wishes - especially those of childless couples who make devotional trips to encourage the guardian spirits to answer their prayers. Of course, the city's pillar is there to be visited throughout the year. As a result of the generosity of devotees, beautiful flowers adorn the foot of the Pillar, making it a special place to take time out. Sometimes the wealthier families fund small classical music and dance performances to favour the spirits. The

Hello dear John and Jorge,

Thank you John for providing the additional information and Jorge for

casting the chart for the new time. Indeed, the available historical

information is important.

However, new documents surveying old information may reach the wrong

conclusion. It is for this reason that I prefer to let the

astrological analysis carry the day and am still exploring the

morning event - when the marker is also said by some sources to have

been ceremonially placed at 54 minutes after sunrise

(dawn) on April 21, 1782.

I would not discount the fact that this time enjoys credence in the

astrological community in Thailand - and this tradition should not be

ignored, as it likely is an authentic store of this information.

Moreover, I find it likely a new king would have preferred the Sun,

the planet representing him and his new dynasty, to rise in the Aries

ascendant, where it is exalted with also Jupiter supremely well

placed in its own sign and the divine H9, where it is closely

conjunct Saturn. Chart lord Mars is also well placed in H2. Compate

this with the Sun in H4 in the Capricorn rising chart where Jupiter

and L2 (and L1 in traditional astrology) Saturn fall into H12. There

is no question which chart I would have selected if given the choice,

and this time was selected by astrologers!

That said, I look forward to study further the rectification by Jorge

based on the information uncovered by John, which continues to

astound in his ability to find incredibly obscure historical

information.

I checked http://www.timeanddate.com to find the sunrise time in

Thailand on April 21. It is around 6 AM in modern times.

Date Sunrise Sunset

Apr 20, 1986 6:02 AM 6:32 PM

Apr 21, 1986 6:02 AM 6:32 PM

Apr 22, 1986 6:01 AM 6:32 PM

Apr 20, 2007 6:02 AM 6:32 PM

Apr 21, 2007 6:02 AM 6:32 PM

Apr 22, 2007 6:01 AM 6:32 PM

Importantly, this time has given a credible result also in terms of

analysing the national affairs, including explaining the long and

relatively peaceful reign of the monarchy.

We now have two charts to predict on, for the same day, which should

offer a fairly speedy process to resolve this question. It also makes

Thailand a more exciting country to follow for the list members. May

the best chart win!

Best wishes,

C

Dear John,

Thanks again for another excellent historical

contribution to mundane astrology.

After your email of December 21, I did a

careful examination of both charts, looking to almost all the events gathered

before. The decision is 95% for the 12:15 AM chart, and 5% for the 6:30 AM chart. Then I

did the rectification work to find the exact TOB. It came out to be exactly 12:15:00 AM.

I know that it will take some time for our

dear list members to become familiar with the new Capricorn rising chart. To simplify

its study, I would suggest to open both charts and to go through each event in

both of them. It will become clear how the midnight chart is the

one to follow in future.

In the net, the reference to this new TOB also

comes in:

On

Sunday of the sixth month, khUn " sip'kam "

(the

10th day of the rising moon period), at 15 minutes after

midnight, the City's pillar was erected. The date is translated to the

western

calendar as April 21, 1782.

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/thai/culture/

Before that, I also did a second

rectification for the existing 6:54 AM chart, and the TOB for

this morning chart is exactly 6:30 AM. This also fits with the

information collected in some sites:

On April

21, 1782 at exactly 54 minutes

past sunrise, Rama I erected the city pillar, the Lak Muang, and only two weeks

after founding the ChaKri dynasty, established the new capital city of Bangkok.

http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/7153/bangk.htm

http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/7153/bangk_main.htm

In 1782,

King Rama I was crowned as the first monarch of the Chakri dynasty. Having

moved his capital from Thonburi to Bangkok, he ordered the ceremony to raise the traditional City Pillar on Sunday,

April 21, 1782 at 6:45

am.

http://www.bangkoktourist.com/places_lak_muang_shrine.php

Regarding the sunrise time for that day,

it comes directly in the Jyotish Tools program:

True Node 365.25 Day Year - Internet

Time: 773 beats

Day: Sunday Sunrise: 5:46 AM

Tithi: Shukla Ashtami

Yoga Pt: 21:27 Li Yogi:Ju AviYogi:Su Dup

Yogi: Ve

Dagha Rashis: Gem Vir

If we add 54 minutes to 5:46 AM, it makes 6:30 AM, which is a

double confirmation of the correctedness of this time.

This makes me think that both times must

have been previously calculated by the king and ruled by any kind of royal written

act… may be for different purposes.

Cheers,

Jorge

Dear Cosmologer,I think both charts are correct. May be they have been for two important events of the beginning of the new country. For your study of the morning chart, I would suggest the new rectified one:

Dear Jorge and list members,

A Thai person of considerable merit has informed me that the

historical practice in Thailand was to consider the start of the new

day at 6 AM, or sunrise. This practice was only recently changed to

harmonise with international practices of considering the start of

the new day at 12 midnight. In his considered opinion the chart would

certainly only refer to sunrise. The change in this practice likely

explains the existing confusion.

Best regards,

C

Then I did the rectification work to find the exact TOB. It came out

to be exactly 12:15:00 AM.

to the preservation of the City Pillar, the " lak muang " . In keeping

with long tradition, all Thai cities have a pillar (lak muang) driven

into the ground to mark the community's cosmic center point, and to

provide a doorway for their guardian spirits. There remains the

strongly held belief that all heavenly influences and spiritual

energies flow through the city's pillar and out into the community at

large; consequently it regularly attracts crowds of worshippers. The

Bangkok city pillar is still believed by many people to have the

power of granting wishes - especially those of childless couples who

make devotional trips to encourage the guardian spirits to answer

their prayers. Of course, the city's pillar is there to be visited

throughout the year. As a result of the generosity of devotees,

beautiful flowers adorn the foot of the Pillar, making it a special

place to take time out. Sometimes the wealthier families fund small

classical music and dance performances to favour the spirits. The

history of these structures indicates that they are not Buddhist;

they are rarely found in Buddist temple compounds. They are actually

thought to stem from Hindu cosmological beliefs.

Dear Cosmologer,

In Vedic tradition, the day begins with sunrise. The tradition in Thailand in 1782 must have been the same. The JTW tells us that sunrise for that day was at 05:46 AM. Adding 54 minutes to it gives us the correct TOB of 06:30 AM.

Best wishes,

Jorge

Dear Jorge,

It is interesting, the information that is coming to light on this

event through our combined investigations. Thank you for establishing

the likely exact time for this event based on what we now known. 22°

Aries rising looks about right.

Best wishes,

  • 2 weeks later...

Dear Cosmo & Jorge, Yes, TOB of 6:30 hrs for April 21, 1782 makes eminent good sense. Furthermore, the cumulating dialogue that brought you to this point of recognition was very instructive, as it has been constructive. NOW LET'S FINISH THE JOB: Please compare these two historic national events for location Bangkok: April 21, 1782 @ 06:30 against June 24, 1932 @ 05:25 [+0r- 5 minutes] In the 1932 event the State was radically transformed from a monarchic State to an oligarchic State. The oligarchy has been the driving force behind political events there ever since. [Crucially for political science, bearing in mind that structurally the oligarchic State is ulterior to its democratic government, where the State controls (even if at times as if pushing on a string) the

Government.] [For List members in search of the conceptual distinctions of The State vs. The Government, please refer to the classic work by the founder of academic political science in American higher education, John W. Burgess, THE FOUNDATIONS OF POLITICAL SCIENCE. Or to cite recent history in order to illustrate, let's take the case of INDIA: In August 1947 the national State was born; in January 1950, its constitutional Government was born [re: Republic Day]. Now back to Thailand: According to the arrangement outlined in para #2 the most recent three kings: RAMA VII (1932-1935); RAMA VIII (1935-1946) and RAMA IX (1946-today) have been only titular heads of State. The national locus of power in the State has been exercised from ""behind the throne"" since 1932. When you find the time, please provide the List with your considered opinions in

comparative analysis, 1782 vs. 1932. Cheers, John cosmologer <cosmologer wrote: Dear Jorge,It is interesting, the information that is coming to light on this event through our combined investigations. Dear John,

Thanks for the added information.

I will look at it carefully as soon as I arrive home.

Best wishes,

Dear Cosmo & Jorge,

Yes, TOB of 6:30 hrs for April 21, 1782 makes eminent good sense.

Furthermore, the cumulating dialogue that brought you to this point of recognition was very instructive, as it has been constructive.

NOW LET'S FINISH THE JOB:

Please compare these two historic national events for location Bangkok: April 21, 1782 @ 06:30 against June 24, 1932 @ 05:25 [+0r- 5 minutes]

In the 1932 event the State was radically transformed from a monarchic State to an oligarchic State. The oligarchy has been the driving force behind political events there ever since. [Crucially for political science, bearing in mind that structurally the oligarchic State is ulterior to its democratic government, where the State controls (even if at times as if pushing on a string) the Government.]

[For List members in search of the conceptual distinctions of The State vs.

The national locus of power in the State has been exercised from " " behind the throne " " since 1932.

When you find the time, please provide the List with your considered opinions in comparative analysis, 1782 vs. 1932.

Cheers,

Thanks again, Jorge A STATEMENT IN CLARIFICATION The COUP of June 24, 1932 was one-of-a-kind-unique in modern Thailand history, The COUP was truly a quote COUP D'ETAT unquote, as it overturned the monarchical State that reigned from April 1782 until June 1932. All of the numerous more recent ones, 20(?) or 30(?) of them (I can't recall the exact number), all these have been precisely quote COUP D'GOUVERNEMENT unquote. Conceptualizing the difference between STATE and GOVERNMENT is crucial to grasping the historic significance of the event of June 24, 1932.
