Explosion Rocks Dover Home

DOVER, N.H.

-- An explosion inside a Rochester home on Monday night

blew the home off of its foundation and sent debris flying into the roadway.

Neighbors first heard the

explosion at around 5 p.m.

" A little bit of a

bang, but mostly I felt a rumble like you'd

feel with an earthquake tremor, " said Kathy McHugh.

McHugh lives across the

street from 89 Broadway and didn't

realize what had happened until a she saw fire trucks outside.

Firefighters believe that a

safety valve malfunctioned on the home's

oil boiler for the heating system, causing pressure to build up.

The blast was powerful

enough to blow whole cinder blocks out from the foundation, bust water pipes

and send debris from broken windows out into the street.

" The chimney is

damaged, the stairways are askew now, there is some good damage, " said

Dover Fire Department Deputy Chief Eric Hagman. " It's a

good thing nobody was walking directly along the street by the house when it

happened. "

When firefighters arrived

the only thing holding up a portion of the home was a metal pipe still intact.

The home was unoccupied and

was currently being renovated. Nobody was hurt.

Investigators said this is a

reminder that people should have their heating systems inspected

to make sure they are operating properly.
