Re: On the exlatation of planets [Was: Planetary Transits...]

My dear Thor, Prof.Choudhry and SA Astrologers,

One thing leads to another, so, just as you picked up the cue from David, I pick up the cue from you and wish to say something about the exalt & Deb signs. When I studied the SA course with our Teacher Prof.Choudhry, I found that the assignment of the exlt & deb signs of the Su to Aries and Libra respectively, carried the implicit assumption that, "summer" came in April/May and "winter" came in Nov/Dec.But, if this is so, then the system of these Exlt & Deb signs are appropriate only to the Northern hemisphere-whereas if we took the Southern Hemisphere, the assignment of these Exlt & Deb signs would be reversed! So, I am thinking aloud about a question, which I had initially posed to Prof.Choudhry.Could it be that a system of Astrology, which originally originated in the Northern Hemisphere, with the "seasonal-bias" of that Hemisphere, has been unjustifiably extended to the Southern Hemisphere as well? It would be interesting to know, what Prof.Choudhry's own thinking on this question is at this stage?

Secondly, like the seasonal festivals you mention, tallying with the Transits of the Sun, through their Exalt signs, etc; in ancient Hindu India, all religious festivals, were timed by the Sages, so as to tally with the "Cosmic Climate of Time", inherrent in the Planetary Transits.I give two examples of this:

Example1:Every twelve years, Jupiter completes one cycle of the Zodiac. The Passage of Jupiter, through the Exalt sign of Cancer; through the MTS of Sagittarius; and through the Sign of Pisces were considered to have greater spiritual favourability and grace, 'understandably'.So, while twelve year "Jupiter Festivals"[the famous KUMBHA MELA, KUMBHA means an URN or VESSEL and MELA means a fair.It is about the creation Myth, the Devas and the Asuras churning the "Milk Ocean"]were held regularly, especially by the devout Hindus on the spiritual path; the festivals were themselves held at three distict places[Haridwar, Allahabad, & Some other place, which I forget now].So, ultimately, there were Jupiter Festivals every four yrs, as the Festivals were being celebrated by rotation in all the three holy places.

Example2: During the passage of Venus, through the Deb sign of Virgo, the Hindus, likewise, had a festival of the Divine Mother[Whose energy Venus represented ], for about ten days, during which the Divine Mother was worshipped in all her diverse benefic as well as malefic aspects, as a compensatory measure-- so as not to suffer from lesser grace, on accout of its passage through the deb sign.

As Prof.Choudhry has pointed out somewhere, the Priestly class lost their Astrological knowledge and thus a "fragmentation of divine knowledge" occurred, creating an artificial gulf between Religious and Spiritual life on the one hand and Astrological knowledge on the other .Afterall, originally, Hindu or Vedic Astrology was an integral part of the spiritual approach to life-the VEDAS.I hope, these comments are pertinent to the discussion, you opened, Thor. And thanks for giving the thread of the cue.

Best Regards

Sankara

On the exlatation of planets [Was: Planetary Transits...]

Dear David and list member,Thanks for the new article on Planetary transits, dear David. In relation to the exit of Sun from its sign of exaltation, Aries, on May 14, it is worthwhile to consider why the Sun is considered exalted and strong in Aries (ca. April 15-May 15), strong in its own sign of Leo (ca. August 18-September 18) and weak in Libra (ca. October 18-November 17), its sign of debilitation. I have been thinking about this in recent days and the likely reasons are as follows. In the Northern hemisphere, where astrology developed, the Sun enters Aries in the Spring. At that time, the plants and trees come alive. In the August, the summer is at its peak, and the flowers and trees in full bloom. Life is vibrant indeed. In the autumn however, the plants and leaves begin to die prior to the oncoming winter. The vibrancy of life is diminished. It came to me the other day that this is likely the reason for these definitions concerning the exaltation, moolatrikona own sign and debilitation for the Sun. This brought the question of what it is that explains the similar definitions of other planets. In this regard, we can note that out of the planets, it is only Mercury and Venus which have some connection to the seasonal cycle of the Sun. They are range bound to the Sun in their geocentric orbit. In this regard, we can note that Venus is debilitated in the signs of Virgo, often at a time when the harvest is being gathered and processed. At such a time, in the farming societies of the past, there was precious little time for the beauty and comforts of life. Meanwhile, Mercury is exalted in Virgo, when the harvest gathering and processing are in full steam. This requires analysis. After the harvest, Venus has passed into its moolatrikona sign of Libra, and there is the celebration of the harvest being completed and the winter months prepared. As the winter months pass,Mercury becomes debilitated in Pisces, often at the very end of the winter. At such at time, it is natural to think that the mind turns to enjoyment and beauty, indicated by Venus. At that time, Venus has at the same time often passed into Pisces, its sign of exaltation, where the beauty and enjoyment again become feted. As for the other planets, I am sure the sages of the past, and our dear , have considered thoughtfully where the Moon and the other planets, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and then Rahu and Ketu are in their signs of exaltation and debilitation, as well as own moolatrikona signs for all but the nodes. In SA, - the Moon is exalted in Taurus, own sign of Cancer and debilitated in Scorpio- Mars is exalted in Capricorn, own sign of Aries and debilitated in Cancer- Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, own sign of Sagittarius and debilitated in Capricorn- Saturn is exalted in Libra, own sign of Aquarius and debilitated in Aries- Rahus is exlated in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio- Ketu is exalted in Scoprio and debilitated in TaurusThe above suggests that the cycles of Jupiter and Mars are somehow connected and that Saturn and Venus are also connected. Comments welcome.Best wishes,Thor SAMVA , "David Hawthorne" <david wrote:>> Planetary Transits for May 10 -- May 16> > > > Sun transits out of its exaltation sign, Aries, and into Taurus, May 14 at 21:48:54 CDT.
