Guest guest
Exemplary posts by Ajay Sehgal and Thor have prompted me to post this essay from a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. How Can Bush Bring Freedom and Democracy to Iraq When He Brings Tyranny to America? By Paul Craig Roberts Paul Craig Roberts wrote the Kemp-Roth bill and was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration. He was Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal editorial page and Contributing Editor of National Review. He is author or coauthor of eight books, including “The Supply-Side Revolution” (Harvard University Press). He has held numerous academic appointments, including the William E. Simon Chair in Political Economy, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Georgetown University and Senior Research Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He has contributed to numerous scholarly journals and testified before Congress on 30 occasions. He has been awarded the U.S. Treasury's Meritorious Service Award and the French Legion of Honor. He was a reviewer for the Journal of Political Economy under Editor, Robert Mundell. He is the co-author of “The Tyranny of Good Intentions.” He is also co-author with Karen Araujo of “Chile: Dos Visiones – La Era Allende-Pinochet” (Santiago: Universidad Andres Bello, 2000). FULL STORY: http://www.lewrockwell.com/roberts/roberts211.html Recent polls show that the majority of the American people are no longer fooled, no matter what politicians say and media report. The election last November demonstrated the electorate’s lack of support for continuing the war. The problem is in implementing the will of the people. Democrats in Congress are not only recipients of AIPAC, oil industry, and military-security complex payoffs just as the Republicans are, Democrats are also behaving very cynically. They believe that it is Bush’s policy that gave them control of Congress in November and that by continuing to let Bush prevail, they will clean up on a larger scale in 2008. They believe that their antiwar base has nowhere else to go. Their cynical logic is probably correct as far as it goes. Bush is being blamed for the war and its failure. The longer this goes on, the worse the situation for the Republicans. Prior to Bush’s invasion of Iraq, I wrote in a column that the unintended consequences of an invasion would be the destruction of Bush, the Republican Party, and the conservative movement. It has taken longer than I thought, largely because of Americans’ blind desire for revenge for 9/11, but the prediction is on track. The problem with the Democrats’ cynical logic is that allowing Bush to prolong the war in Iraq increases the chances that Cheney, Israel, and the neoconservatives can contrive a war with Iran. Most experts, and many in our own military, think that a war with Iran would go very badly for us, endangering our troops in Iraq by exposing them to more intense attacks from the more numerous Shiites, who would be armed with Iranian weapons that can neutralize our tanks and helicopters, leaving our fragmented and divided troops isolated and cut off from supplies and retreat routes. The pending disaster would play into Cheney’s hands. With America faced with the loss of an army, Cheney and the neoconservatives would likely succeed in convincing Bush to nuke Iran. Cheney and Rumsfeld have already changed US war doctrine to permit preemptive nuclear attack against non-nuclear powers. Surprised by the inability of the US military to prevail in Iraq and by Israel’s military failure against Hezbollah, the neocons concluded that the only way to establish US/Israeli hegemony over the entire Middle East is to nuke Iran. The neocons believe that using nuclear weapons against Iran will demonstrate to the Muslim world that they have no alternative but to submit to US hegemony. *************************************************"FACTS ARE STUBBORN THINGS; AND WHATEVER MAY BE OUR WISHES, OUR INCLINATIONS, OR THE DICTATES OF OUR PASSION, THEY CANNOT ALTER THE STATE OF FACTS AND EVIDENCE" John Adams, December 1770 Need a vacation? Guest guest
Dear John, Thanks for this dire warning. The whole article is even more interesting as there the arguments for the title emerge: http://www.lewrockwell.com/roberts/roberts211.html Paul Craig Roberts, whose credential are impressive albeit a bit dated, seems to be out on a limb. For instance, he asserts the US administration is deftly planning to nuke Iran, but never mentions that Iran is toiling away to construct a nuclear bomb, which is a grave threat to the security of Israel. Secondly, he asserts the administration is taking away legal safeguards of Americans, like suspending some aspects of Habeus Corpus, which he claims is a move to impose tyranny, but he never mentions that the reason for that is the threat of terrorism on American soil and the danger it poses for Americans, such as if a nuclear device were detonated in a densely populated area. Without at least mentioning these counter-wailing elements, his accusations ring a bit hollow. That said, it is clear in the SAMVA USA chart, that the aspect of L8 Saturn in H5 of management on the L2 Sun in H7 of Foreign policy, as well as the affliction of Rahu of houses 10 (administration), 2 (relations with neighboring countries), 4 (public harmony) and 6 (adversaries) suggests the US administration is capable of resorting to mainipulation with regard to the above mentioned indications. In the real world, incredibly bad things go one, that would turn an ordinary persons stomach upside down. I guess the US government feels it has to deal with forces that do not respect the rule of law or engage in a range of actions that are consistent with human decency. Recently, drawings of Al-Quaeda torture methods was released as well as prisoners released from their hands. It showed that the actions of the US military at Abu Grahbi prison was childsplay compared to the Al-Queda forces. Does all of this suggest the US is pro-active in unleashing the forces of evil for the benefit of those in the US government or the benefit of American citizens. I doubt it, but many feel this is the case, including PCR. That said, we can probably never answer that question with any degree of certitude. What we can say about this from the SAMVA USA chart is that there is the potential for manipulation. At the same time, there do not appear to be aspects in the near future which are difficult in the chart with regard to that area, such as the transits of Saturn and Rahu. So, we can follow what happens, but I would be very much surprised if the Bush administration were to pull a stunt like dropping a nuclear bomb on Iran. I very much doubt such a scenario could be playing out. That said, there are other countries involved as well, so it is hard to predict what others might do. Certainly, Iran´s chart has been challenged this Spring, but even they appear to be emerging from it. , who had the benefit of seeing both the chart for the USA and Iran predicted the problem would not get out of hand this Spring. His prediction proved correct. Guest guest
Dear list members, The latest news is that the US and Iran are in direct talks about the situation in Iraq. That's a good sign.
