Best wishes, Thor South African miners being pulled from underground Highlights Thousands trapped in gold mine Falling water pipe knocked out power to elevator that carries men out of mine Carletonville is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Johannesburg (CNN) -- Power has been restored to a South African gold mine, and some of the more than 3,200 miners inside are beginning to return to the surface after an accident kept them stuck underground for nearly a day, a government official said. South Africa's ambassador to the United States, Welile Nhlapo, told CNN that the men were " quite safe. " " We believe that the effort that is being made should come up with some positive results, " he said. About 350 miners had been pulled to safety after about three hours of work, the company said in a report from The Associated Press. There were no injuries and there was no immediate danger to any of the workers in Harmony Gold Mining Co.'s Elandsrand Mine, company and union officials said. The workers are more than 1.3 miles (2 kilometers) underground at Harmony Gold's Elandsrand mine in Carletonville, according to Lesiba Seshoka, a spokesman for South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers. Carletonville is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Johannesburg. A falling water pipe knocked out power to the elevator that carries men out of the mine, company officials told the South African Press Association. Nhlapo said a secondary lift was bringing the men out of the mine in groups of 73 at a time -- meaning it could take up to 24 hours to retrieve them all. No injuries have been reported. The accident happened about 6 a.m. (midnight Tuesday ET), Seshoka said. " We are not really so sure about what actually happened so, we are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping they'll be OK, " he said. The workers have adequate ventilation and access to water, Harmony Gold told the press association.
