Thanks for the post on the 1965 blackout...seems we learn a great deal from our rearward looking. I wish to say something from a layman's perspective about the US and world economic difficulties...it seems as if we as students of astrology seem to have a thick glass between our astrology and actual events. That such and such transits come and go and when the planets are in better spaces the former difficulties disappear. At least that is my thought.

When in actuallity...if I can call it that...astrology points out very well with SA certain triggers...but events continue unwinding long after the triggering event (transits or whatnot) pass us by. There is no practical way American finacial institutions can improve without coming out clean and writing off tremendous loses particularly with the newer investment vehicles called CDO's etc etc.

The general indebtedness of the US, close to 9 trillion dollars...is going to have repercussions of a disquieting nature for years if not decades. Even when the planets are in more positive spaces...the trigger event passed, but the energy continues to work itself out...as karma dictates.

With the favor of good planetary positions...events unfolding might be dealt with more intelligently...more favorable laws might be passed that ensure such events will not happen again...in this decade. (Some of the rules for banking put in place after the Great Depression were removed just in time for out present debucle...)

My point is that trigger events have happened already and we will be dealing with that for years and it will not be pleasant...it is a mistake to think once the transit is passed as the recent Jupiter/Saturn one in the Cancer Rising USA chart...all will once again be peaches and creame.

BTW thank you for your much effort and energy spent on educating us, with the Professor...God Bless. Don Park

Re: Blackout On This Day in 1965

Dear Shayn,

Thanks for this insight. I add some additional information for the benefit of list members - as well as the chart in gif file.

Interestingly, the blackout occurred 42 years ago, to the day: "At 5:27 p.m., November 9, 1965, the entire Northeast area of the United States and large parts of Canada went dark. From Buffalo to the eastern border of New Hampshire and from New York City to Ontario, a massive power outage struck without warning. Trains were stuck between subway stops. People were trapped in elevators. Failed traffic signals stopped traffic dead. And, at the height of the Cold War, many thought Armageddon had arrived. One pilot flying over a darkened New York City stated, "I thought, 'another Pearl Harbor!'" By 5:40 p.m. that evening, 80,000 square miles of the Northeast United States and Ontario, Canada, were without power, leaving 30 million people in the dark." http://blackout.gmu.edu/events/tl1965.html

What happened: "The cause was a "single faulty relay at the Sir Adam Beck Station no. 2 in Ontario, Canada, which caused a key transmission line to disconnect ("open"). This small failure triggered a sequence of escalating line overloads that quickly raced down the main trunk lines of the grid, separating major generation sources from load centers and weakening the entire system with each subsequent separation. As town after town went dark throughout the northeast, power plants in the New York City area automatically shut themselves off to prevent the surging grid from overloading their turbines. Within a quarter of an hour the entire CANUSE area was down. Investigators referred to the 1965 blackout as a "cascade effect"-much like a row of dominoes falling one after another."

The blackout only lasted 14 hours: "By 11 o'clock, the power was restored in 75 percent of Brooklyn, and by 2 a.m., the borough was fully equipped with electric power. By midnight, much if the Bronx and Queens were lit. And, at 6:58 a.m., almost fourteen hours after the massive blackout struck New York, power was restored citywide. "

More importantly, the blackout caused no serious setbacks: "The massive blackout of 1965 had many ramifications. It forced Americans to reconsider their dependence on electricity, and propelled electrical engineers to reexamine the power grid system."

The event is clearly seen in the SAMVA USA chart by way of MASSIVE stationary afflictions in the chart:

Saturn-Moon period was running. At the time the blackout struck, transit L1 Moon at 3° 29' Taurus H11, exactly opposite to natal L6 Jupiter at 4° 25' Scorpio H5. Moreover, transit stationary Ketu at 11° 17' Scorpio H5 was conjunct natal L10 Mars at 10° 08', while transit stationary Rahu in Taurus H11 afflicted natal L3 Mercury at 12° 06' Capricorn H7. Transit stationary L8 Saturn at 17° 07' Aquarius H8 was afflicted by natal Ketu at 17° 47' Libra H4.

Best wishes,

Dear Thor and List,

On this day in 1965 the entire Northeast section of the United States experienced a blackout that affected 30 million people for 13 hours. I thought it would be interesting to see how this event manifested in the SAMVA USA chart. I believe the stationary movement of the functional malefics Saturn, Rahu and Ketu contributed to the crisis.

L8 Saturn, ruler of obstructions, was the main period lord and Mars, ruler of energy, was the subperiod lord. In transit, Mars was in infancy, badly placed in H6, and also suffering from a weak dispositor. Because of this transit weakness, the otherwise strong natal Mars had difficulty protecting itself from the stationary (and thus more powerful) transiting nodes which afflicted it (77%).

Communication and transportation were chaotic as millions of people were stranded during rush hour. Natal Mercury, natural significator and L3 (communication) was afflicted by transiting Rahu (83%). In transit, Mercury was afflicted by Saturn (72%) . Transiting Saturn also afflicted natal Rahu (86%) further adding to the confusion while natal Ketu afflicted transiting Saturn (86%).

Other afflictions occurred, but to a lesser degree.

Warm regards,Shayn

Hello Mr. Don Park, So, there are:

1. Specific focus areas generated by close transit influences.

2. General trends indicated by sub periods.

3. Natal indicators of credit-worthiness.

4. Natal indicators of indebtedness.

The strength of the Moon, the Sun and Mars ruling capability of earning, status, wealth, entrepreneurial strength and the indicators for earnings generate credit-worthiness.

The placement of Venus in the sixth house is the indicator for challenges for managing credits, conflicting priorities and conflicts.

The close influence of Rahu on the tenth, second, fourth, and sixth houses is the indicator of ambitiousness and consumerism.

The close influence of Ketu on the fourth house is indicator of the strains like the current problems triggered by the transit influences.

The knowledge certainly helps us in understanding the future and taking decisions in life to achieve greater success/satisfaction and avoid pitfalls.

Dear Mr. Park,

Thank you for the kind words. You are welcome.

Indeed, a stationary transit affliction can have long term

repercussions. But an analysis of the planetary influences in the

chart, including in the context of the operating periods, is

necessary to understand it. Take for instance, the considerable

transit afflictions involving H4 and its lord, as well as Jupiter,

the sub-period lord, in the early months of 2007:

- transit stationary Ketu at 23° Leo H2 was afflicting natal L4 Venus

at 24° Sagittarius H6.

- transit stationary Rahu at 23° Aquarius H8 was afflicting H4 MEP at

20° Libra.

- transit sub-period lord L6 Jupiter at 25° Scorpio H5 was conjunct

natal L8 Saturn at 27° Scorpio, while aspecting transit Saturn at 24°

Cancer H1

These were massive transit afflictions which should be considered an

astrological event that served as the trigger for the marginal (CDO,

sub-prime, Alt-A) loan loss crises that famously erupted at that

time. While concerns about the loan losses seemed to die down in

ensuing months, the crises erupted again in July/August and now

October/November. In other words, it has not been concluded and has

continued to haunt the US financial system.

As explains, a comprehensive analysis of the natal

potential determines if the country can manage the situation or if

the crisis widens and becomes unmanageable in terms of the full

extent of losses, which then are realised and much misery is

unleashed on people. His conclusion seems to be that the crisis will

be managed and the financial system continue to function, at least

for the coming year.

Again, with transit L6 Jupiter, ruler of financial stabiilty

temporarily weak and afflicted, and transit L4 Venus, ruler of fixed

assets, temporarily weak, the outlook for the lending institutions

has temporarily worsened quite a bit. However, soon Jupiter will

enter its own sign and H6, where the indications of financial

stability are strong and Venus is also about enter its own sign Libra

H4 where it will also do much better. The transit strength of Sun

will also soon improve. At that time, the overall situation is likely

to get better. But you are right there is an underlying weakness in

the financial system, which some consider a " bubble " kept in tact by

unrealistically high valuations. For instance, if asset prices

(housing prices, the dollar viz-a-viz other currencies, or share

prices on the stock exchanges) were to fall sharply, as they

technically could, the crisis would deepen and likely become

unmanageable. However, this does not seem to be on the cards for the

USA based on an analysis of the SAMVA USA chart.

Looking further out. What will happen when Jupiter enters Capricorn

H7, its sign of debilitation in 2009, where it will only have 50%

strength, or Aquarius H8 in 2010, where it will be similarily weak.

In those houses it will again become vulnerable to transit

afflictions. Any transit afflictions at that time would put its

indications of financial stability again under strain.

Best wishes,

Thor
