Astrology and astronomy in Oriya and Sanskrit language give us the proof about their existence through the availability of the abundant literature. In our state museum there are some palm leaf manuscripts are preserved for the enthusiasts in this field. Many people from different places have also kept some old and genuine manuscripts. Some of them are in Devanagari script and some are in Udra language which is still in a latent state. Before these manuscripts get decayed, if they would have translated into English and Oriya, a lot of valuable knowledge will be passed on to the present generation. Till yet, to our knowledge, probably the first gleaming trail-blazer astrologer cum astronomer was Satananda Acharya. He took birth in 1068 A.D. at Puri. He had written three books on astronomy and astrology named Bhaswati Karana, Satananda Ratnamala and Satananda Sangraha. Bhaswati Karana is based on astronomy and was written in Sanskrit, written in 1099

A.D. He has followed the principles of the great astronomical treaty, named `Surya Sidhanta' written by sage Maya. The book Bhaswati has many astronomical hints and guidelines including the movements of the planets, their positions, the constellations, solar and lunar eclipse, the art of the preparation of Panchangas, Ephemeris, planetary conjunctions, rising and setting of planets, etc. Sri Aniruddha has written a commentary on this book and Sri Trilochan Mohanty has translated it into Oriya. Another Polestar in this field was great king of Paralakhemundi, Sri Jagannath Narayan Deb. He has written the book ` Ayrudaya Koumudi' in Sanskrit in 1650 A.D. There were some other famous astrologers in their respective times. Tripurari Dash was such an astrologer. People came to know about his competency in this field through his

book `Keraliya Dash', which is a translation of a book from Kerala. Sri Raghunath Dash's `Utpata Tarangini', Sri Maguni Pathi's `Graha Chakra Tikka', Mahamahopadhaya Chakadi Nanda's `Ratna Koumudi' and `Balabodha' are other famous astrologers and their works. The most talented and versatile among them was Samanta Chandrasekhara. He was born on 13/12/1835 at Khandapada. His full name was Mahamahopadhaya Chandrasekhar Singh Harichandan Mohapatra Samant, but he was better known as Pathani Samanta. His master piece of work was `Sidhanta Darpana', published in 1899 A.D. There are twenty-four manifestations and two thousand five hundred Sanskrit verses in it. He was the first astronomer in the world to find the eviction of Moon. There were some major mistakes in local panchangas at his time. He spent sleepless nights after

nights to research inside his hut by making a hole in it. He has never used modern telescope, clock, observatory, etc. rather he took the help of the Sun-dial , measuring-rod & bamboo sticks for his research. To test his depth of knowledge the then commissioner of Cuttack Mr. Cook called for Samant Chandrasekhar to measure the height of the Saptasajya mountain through two bamboo sticks .His calculations came cent percent correct for which the British Govt. adorned him the title Mahamahopadhaya in 1894. The British astronomer Mr. E.E.Maunder wrote in his book `Astronomy without telescopes', that, "There is still living in Orissa, the Hindu astronomer Chandrasekhara who with his home-made instruments & without any optical assistance, has determined the elements of the chief members of the solar systems with a most astonishing accuracy .He also had a very good knowledge on predictive astrology . He took final emancipation on 10.6.1904 after

reaching Puri before the 13th day of his death after calculating his demise. Pandit Baikoli Mohapatra Jyotisha Visarada (1908-1977) was also astrologer of par-excellence. His prediction on the Bihar earthquake of 1934 was published in Oriya daily `Asha' and in `New Orissa' in 1933. He has written minimum sixteen books on astrology in Oriya. His name `Baikoli' means a wild poisonous fruit. His previous siblings were having very short life expectancy. So in a expectation his parents gave this name. As the name suggests, any body takes this fruit become & mad, the lord of death may have a second thought before taking him. Besides his previous prediction, he has some outstanding prediction to his credit. Some of them were on, world war, splitting of congress Party, formation of separate province of Orissa, election of Sri. V. V. Giri as

President, etc. The Magharaja of Khallikote awarded him the title Jyotisha Visharada. The Ayodhya Samskrit Samiti awarded him the title Jyotisha Bhaskara.the Orissa Sahitya Academi honoured him the title Upayana.Samanta Chandrasekhara Smruti parishad honoured him with the title Jyotirvidya Vachaspati. His book `Jyotishara Ratnavalli' of three volumes is famous in the householders of Orissa. Sri Bira Hanumana Sastri (1911- 1994) is well known in Orissa. He received the title `Jyotishacharya' from Sanskrit university Puri after studying astrology between 1927 to 1934. He was the gold medallist in Astrology from Muzafar college, Bihar in 1934. He was a lecturer in astrology for twenty years in Sanskrit university, Puri from 1949. He was very proficient in mathematical astrology. He has translated `Sidhanta Darpana' of Samanta Chandrasekhar to Oriya. Sri Dibakar

Parida(1911-1941) , was not behind in this field though his main ambition was the freedom of India. His book Jataka Alankara is very famous in Orissa .The king and ex.- minister of Orissa Sri Laxinarayan Bhanja Deo(1912-1986) from Keonjhar was vice chairman of Indian Astrological Council & was a good foreteller. Sri Padmalochan Mishra(1929-1986) has written three Astrological which were very simple to follow. He was export in remedial astrology by using Tantra, Mantra & Jantra. He was honored with `Jyotirbidya' Vachaspati`from Samanta Chandrasekhar Smruti Parisheda & with `AryaPadma' from Vishal Hirakhanda Sahitya Vihar. Devotional poets also had their curosity in astrology. Sarala Dash, Achyutananda Dash, Jagannath Das, Kabi samrat Upendra Bhanja were some such aficionados. Dear RK,

I was asking Lalit about the source of information that he has given.

That way the person who has compiled the information gets credit for

this valuable information. I am sure there is much astrological text in

Orissa that has not been available to public at large due to its not

getting translated in English. Sometimes a mixture of Sanskrit and Udia

language is also used in that region and therefore it might be great if

the gems in that language are translated by the wise, who are equally

adept at both the languages.

As to the Tamra Pothi, one Tamra Pothi is at Kakatpur, about 20 km.s

from Bhuvaneshwar, where Amarehwar Mishra reads it and there is no

fixed fees prescribed. I know of this as during one of the SJC

conferences at Puri where I was invited to deliver lecture on Chandra

yogas, Sanjay Rath had arranged visit of astrologers to that place.

There are two more. I think one is in Jhinti and another at Baichuan.

Before reading they have to be energized and then letters appear

indicating the question that is in mind of the querist, followed by the

answers. They are like mantra nadis.

Regards,

Chandrashekhar.

Dear Aavesh,

I know that hey have some Sanskrit texts, but will find out if they

have any from Orissa. If they are in Sanskrit I could try to unravel

them. If in Udia language, that is a language that I do not understand

well.

Dear Lalit,

I had no doubt that you will access authentic info. Only wanted to tell

you to mention the source so that people are aware of the authenticity

of the info.

Astro healing is a somewhat complex area and the learned have different

approach to healing and there is a great deal of difference of opinion

on what are can be healed through astrology. My views on the subject

are a bit orthodox and may ruffle a few feathers, especially amongst

those who profess that every ill of a chart is capable of cure through

astrological remedies ( which are actually remedies of Pujas, mantras

and gems etc, based on astrological principles). So it might be better

if we steer clear of this at least as far as inputs from my side are

concerned.
