Guest guest
Dear Leonard, Read the Puranas and you will get the answer to your query. It may interest you to know that sage Parashara does not claim to be originator of Jyotish but credits it to Brahma, Narada, Shaunaka, and other sages. Only 4 chapters of Jaimini out of 8 said to have been written are available and even in those the order of sutras of the 3rd and 4th chapter is different in different versions. I would like to know what is the origin (or origins) of the current schools of practice regarding the use of gemstones as remedial measures in Vedic Astrology? It seems there is no ancient authority for these schools. As far as I can determine, the first mention of gemstones by a recognized astrological authority is in Varaha Mihira’s Brihat Samhita, where he mentions 22 gems and talks about their various characteristics, but without reference to astrology. The first one to assign gemstones to the planets was the author of the 14th century Jatika Parijata. But the author does not mention using gems as remedial measures based on analysis of a horoscope. In Muhurta Chintamani, it is mentioned that wearing a particular gemstone will please the planet that is associated with it in the Jatika Parijata, but again no mention is made of wearing a gem to address a situation presented by someone's horoscope, it only says that wearing a gem will please a planet during its transit. However, it seems to have become common practice among Vedic astrologers these days to make gemstone recommendations based on an analysis of the client’s horoscope. But there are many methods of assigning gemstones and many different theories of how gemstones work as remedial measures such that five different astrologers will likely recommend four or five different gems for the same client. Where did all this come from? And since the universally recognized ancient astrological Gurus Parasara, Jaimini and (more recently) Varaha Mihira did not use gemstones as remedial measures, but rather used many other methods such as chanting mantras, doing pujas, charity and so on, it this a valid technique of the science of Vedic Astrology? Thank you for your help. Leonard Bogle
