Mobile operators fined $8.75 Million for fake identity SIMs

New Delhi: For selling SIM cards to people using faking identity, the mobile operators have been asked to pay a fine of about $8.75 million by the Department of Telecom (DOT) for defaulting on r verification norms. The DOT said that the penalty was imposed for the period between June 2008 and November 2009. The mobile operators were asked to shell out about $6.66 million by the DOT for not adhering to the r verification norms during 2008-09. BSNL, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone, Tatas, MTNL, Spice Communications, Reliance Telecom and BPL are among the major defaulting operators.

Some of the states with the highest penalties include Jammu and Kashmir with a penalty of $1.4 million and Assam with $200,000. These penalties were imposed during April-July period.
