It struck at 3:48 PM with the quake startling people in the metropolitan city of Reykjavik. The exact size of the quake has been provisionally estimated at between 6.2 and 6.7 on the richter at the epicenter, the town of Selfoss, about 50 km away from Reykjavik. The quake was felt hundreds of km away. This is the largest earthquake in Iceland since the large quakes on June 17, 2000. There are no reports of injuries yet but a radio report indicates rescue vehicles with sirens are moving in the vicinity of the epicenter. There are no reports yet of damages. However, there are reports of rock slides in a nearby mountain and a major bridge over a river has been closed to traffic. Earlier today there have been series of earthquakes, with the largest then at 3.2 richter quake outside of Reykjavik, near the village of Selfoss.
