Dear Don,

 

If I recall it correctly, a thread like this took place many years

ago on an SA list when mentioned that humanity is

at present in the age of Kaliyuga (iron). This is the most crude of

the many vedic ages. During this long period humanity is immersed in

materialism, as also you mention. This has implications for the

application of the spiritual science of astrology, and the Systems

Approach takes this into consideration. I don't recall how much

longer this age is said to last. According to this theory, humanity

will see a dawmning of a more spiritual age sometime in the future.

Perhaps others have insight on the timing aspect. This however would

likely be outside of the scope of vedic astrological transits or

vimshottari dasas.

 

There are also numerous other ideas about trends and cycles in human

life. Many thinkers consider humanity in an upward trend when it

comes to social evolution, such that human society always grows in

social awareness and becomes more considerate. Certainly, the level

of brute violence is less acceptable in our daily affairs now than it

was a few thousand years ago. Others superimpose a cycle on this

improving trend. For instance, SOROKIN spoke of society alternating

between SENTIENT and SENSATE epochs. We would presently be in a

sensate epoch in most places in the world. SARKAR discussed a social

cycle with ages of LABOURERS, WARRIORS, INTELLECTUALS and

ACQUISITORS, with the last (present) age becoming most decadent,

etc., etc.
