Hurricane Katrina, Gustav and Okeechobee

It has been three years since the deadly hurricane Katarina slammed into the states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, devastating New Orleans. The question now is if similar devastation lies ahead with hurricane Gustav, which is building force in the Caribbean. To understand the astrology of hurricanes in the USA, let's examine also one earlier hurricane which was the biggest on record before Katarina.

 

 

HURRICANE OKEECHOBEE - September 1928

The Okeechobee hurricane, or Hurricane San Felipe Segundo, was a deadly hurricane that struck the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and Florida in September of the 1928 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the first recorded hurricane to reach Category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale in the Atlantic basin; as of 2006, it remains the only recorded hurricane to strike Puerto Rico at Category 5 strength, and one of the ten most intense ever recorded to make landfall in the United States. The hurricane caused devastation throughout its path. As many as 1,200 people were killed in Guadeloupe. The storm directly struck Puerto Rico at peak strength, killing at least 300 and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. In south Florida at least 2,500 were killed when storm surge from Lake Okeechobee breached the dike surrounding the lake, flooding an area covering hundreds of square miles. In total, the hurricane killed at least 4,078 people and caused around $100 million ($1 billion 2006 US dollars) in damages over the course of its path

 

Rahu-Mercury period was operating.

- 8th lord SATURN at 20° 24' Scorpio was conjunct 5th house MEP, aspecting the 7th house and 2nd lord SUN, 11th house and 2nd house. Saturn had been stationary in this degree almost 2 months prior to the hurricanes landfall. Fatalities and destruction of wealth is seen.

- 6th lord JUPITER at 17° 02' Aries and 10th house was conjunct natal RAHU at 17° 47' Aries, suggesting a disruption.

- RAHU at 9° 56' Taurus and 11th house was conjunct natal 1st lord MOON at 7° 19' Taurus. In the month following the hurricane RAHU settled at 8° in stationary orbit, over the natal MOON.

- KETU at 9° 56' Scorpio and 5th house was conjunct natal 10th lord MARS at 10° 05' Scorpio

- 10th lord MARS at 29° 24' Taurus and 11th house was opposite natal 8th lord SATURN at 26° 47' Scorpio

 

Clearly, the afflictions were numerous and close, involving the 2nd lord SUN and 2nd house. The most most devastating hurricane in history made landfall during that evening and night.

 

HURRICANE KATARINA - August 2005

 

Hurricane Katrina was the costliest and one of the five deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States. It was the sixth-strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded and the third-strongest hurricane on record that made landfall in the United States. Katrina formed on August 23 during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season and caused devastation along much of the north-central Gulf Coast. Starting Monday, August 29, the most severe loss of life and property damage occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana. Katrina's storm surge caused 53 different levee breaches in greater New

Orleans submerging eighty percent of the city.

At least 1,836 people lost their lives in Hurricane Katrina and in the subsequent floods, making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane. The storm is estimated to have been responsible for $81.2 billion (2005 U.S. dollars) in damage, making it the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

Venus-Rahu period was operating.

On August 23rd, 2005, when the hurricane was forming, the following transits involving the slow moving planets were operative:

RAHU at 20° 30' Pisces and 9th house was afflicting the MEP of the 9th, 1st, 3rd and 5th houses and transit MERCURY at 18° Cancer and 1st house. KETU in Virgo was afflicting 3rd, 7th, 9th and 11th houses.

-6th lord JUPITER at 23° 05' Virgo was afflicting 2nd lord SUN at 23° 44' Capricorn and 7th house. JUPITER was conjunct KETU. Major failures of levees took place.

- 8th lord SATURN at 10° 56' Cancer and 1st house was afflicting natal 3rd lord MERCURY at 12° 05' Capricorn and 7th house.

 

When the hurricane made landfall in the morning of August 29, 2005

- a debilitated transit 4th lord VENUS was conjunct natal KETU at 20° Virgo.

- 8th lord SATURN at 11° 36' Cancer was in applying and closer conjunction with natal MERCURY

-6th lord JUPITER at 24° 06' was still exactly afflicting natal 2nd lord SUN

- the nodes had settled into stationary transit at 19° 45' Pisces and Virgo.

 

Clearly, the affliction to 2nd lord SUN and its house, was a key factor. Involvement of 8th lord SATURN explains the numerous fatalities and JUPITERs involvement explains the engineering failures.

 

HURRICANE GUSTAV - August to September 2008

Hurricane Gustav is the seventh tropical cyclone, third hurricane and second major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. It formed on the morning of August 25, about 260 miles (420 km) southeast of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and rapidly strengthened into a tropical storm that afternoon and into a hurricane early on August 26. Later that day it made landfall near the Haitian town of Jacmel. Eighty-five deaths have been attributed to Gustav, and seven are still missing in Haiti.

Gulf Coast residents flee 'extremely dangerous' Gustav

BELLE CHASE, Louisiana (CNN) -- A hurricane watch was issued Saturday afternoon for southeastern Texas to the Alabama-Florida border as Hurricane Gustav's sustained winds reached 150 mph on its expected path to the U.S. Gulf Coast. At 5 p.m. ET, the eye of the storm was about 130 miles (210 km) east-northeast of Cuba's western tip and moving northwest about 15 mph. The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, referred to the ferocity of Gustav's winds. "This makes Gustav an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson

hurricane scale," it said.

Venus-JUPITER period is operating.

- transit stationary RAHU is afflicting 2nd lord SUN

- transit 8th lord SATURN at 17° 25' Leo and 2nd house is afflicting natal KETU in Libra and 4th house and is also under aspect from natal RAHU in Aries in 10th house. Transit

- JUPITER at 18° 39' Sagittarius and 6th house aspects SATURN. At the same time, natal KETU afflicts transit JUPITER. A sudden crisis situation could very well develop.

- transit 2nd lord SUN will become conjunct transit SATURN in the first days of September. At this time, the weather could turn quite bad and destruction of property follow.

- 4th lord VENUS is debilitated but unafflicted in Virgo and 3rd house, with transit RAHU in 7th house MEP aspecting the 3rd house. This situation could serve to create damage to property.

 

 

 

The period is not the worst one in the SAMVA USA chart, but the transits are quite bad at this time. However, they have been worse before. Still, the aspects in late August or early September could very well result in very bad weather that destroys property and causes fatalities.

 

has recently warned about the transits in mid September, when several planets, VENUS, MERCURY and MARS will be transiting at 24° Virgo and 3rd house where they will come under the aspect of transit stationary Rahu at 24° Capricorn and the 7th house. At that time, the disruption could be quite pronounced for a few days. It will be interesting to follow.

The latest weather information from the Gulf of Mexico indicates that

Hurricane Gustav is losing strength, which would be a welcome

development.

Oil Falls as Hurricane Gustav Weakens, Easing Damage Fears

Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil fell, reversing earlier gains, after

Hurricane Gustav weakened, easing concern of widespread damage to

drilling rigs and refineries.

 

Gustav has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm, the second-weakest

of the five levels of hurricane strength, the National Hurricane

Center in Miami said in its latest advisory. Preparations for the

storm closed 96 percent of offshore oil production and about 10

percent of U.S. refining capacity.

 

``The latest forecast shows that while Gustav is perfectly aimed at

the heart of U.S. oil and gas production it's not quite as strong as

was initially feared,'' said Mike Wittner, Societe Generale's London-

based head of oil research. ``The refining system is not as stretched

this time round compared with Rita and Katrina.''

At the same time, when making a prediction for late August/early

September 2008 weatherwise, I was torn. On the one hand we have a

very bad aspect applying from transit JUPITER to transit SATURN, with

transit Sun now joining the mix, weakening further 8L Saturn in Leo

(due to its affliction to Sun). On the other hand we have transit 4th

lord VENUS, while debilitated in Virgo, well placed and unafflicted

in the 3rd house. It was therefore that I thought the weather would

not be so bad at this time. Still, it was bothering me if the Jupiter-

Saturn aspect could create some crisis, superceding the normal

indications of Venus, as lord of weather (an element in comforts).

 

In any event, the expectation is that the weather may turn out worse

in mid September, when Venus becomes closely afflicted by transit

stationary RAHU along with its dispositor transit 3rd lord MERCURY

and also 10th lord MARS.

 

Well, we will soon see how the weather turns out in Louisiana and

other coastal states in the month of September. So far the more

recent news has been a relief for these areas - and in line with we

would expect based on the SAMVA USA chart.
