Guest guest
Dear Thor, This is a very good post. Best regards, Vyas Munidas - " Cosmologer " <cosmologer <samva > Thursday, September 11, 2008 2:01 PM Saturn and the economy Dear friends, In early 1998, wrote an illuminating article which highlighted the role of Saturn as an indicator of the economy. INFLUENCES OF SATURN IN 1998 by Prof VKC.doc Article by Prof Choudhry predicting global recession in 1998 SAMVA/files At that time, transit Saturn was debilitated in the sign of Aries and in the Spring came under the close affliction of transit Rahu in Leo until early 1999. As we now know, the global economy succumbed to a bad financial crisis, which was especially hard for Russia, which defaulted on its international payments obligations in August of that year. This is seen clearly in the chart for the UNION OF RUSSIA AND BELARUS, as explained in a recent blog. http://cosmologer.blogspot.com/2008/08/union-of-russia-and-belarus.html In another article in the same folder on the SAMVA web page we can see some of the indications attributed to Saturn in mundane astrology. MUNDANE ASTROLOGY.doc List of mundane indications SAMVA/files SATURN: Civil servants, low technology industry and mines. While these may not represent an exhaustive overview of the indications of Saturn, they nevertheless reveal that it would have a significant bearing on economic conditions. When incomes and employment are growing, so do investment and consumption. Moreover, conditions of the economy have repercussions for the financial system, notably the lending to firms for investment and to income earners for consumption. At times of economic slow down, when both unemployment rises and incomes may stagnate or decline, the banks and other financial intermediaries normally reduce their lending. The change in lending thus clearly amplifies the booms and busts. Depending on the placement of Saturn in a natal chart of a country, the impact of affliction to Saturn may range from being quite adverse to not so bad. In 1998, Saturn was in Aries and 10th house in the SAMVA USA chart, while Rahu was in Leo and 2nd house. Both these houses are good. Moreover, during the period of transit affliction, neither Rahu or Saturn were afflicting in the chart. As a result, economic growth remained positive for that year and in the following year, 1999. There was one year that registered negative GDP growth in recent years. It was 1982. Growth had been erratic due to Paul Volcker's decision to hike interest rates in the early 1980s in order to bring down inflation. Table 1: Annual GDP growth rates in the USA in early 1980s.1980 -0,2% 1981 2,5% 1982 -1,9% 1983 4,5% To determine more closely at which times during each of these years the growth was contracting the most, we can also look at the quarterly numbers, at annual growth rate. The efforts of the Fed to bring down inflation had an effect of reducing GDP growth some quarters, but most significantly in the 4th quarter of 1981 and 1st quarter of 1982. As growth was either anemic or negative for the remainder of the year, the annual growth rate in 1982 was negative by almost 2% that year. Table 2: Quarterly growth at annual rates in early 1980s. 1980q1 0,3% 1980q2 -2,0% 1980q3 -0,2% 1980q4 1,9% 1981q1 2,0% 1981q2 -0,8% 1981q3 1,2% 1981q4 -1,2% 1982q1 -1,6% 1982q2 0,5% 1982q3 -0,4% 1982q4 0,1% 1983q1 1,2% 1983q2 2,3% 1983q3 2,0% 1983q4 2,0% Mercury-RAHU period was operating from October 1981 to May 1984. During this period it is clear there several afflictions involving natal and transit Saturn, Jupiter and Rahu. As Jupiter is important for inflation, the conjunction of 8th lord SATURN and and 6th lord JUPITER in Virgo from October 1980 to October 1981 is very important in this regard. From December 1980 to July 1981 this combination was afflicted from transit FM KETU in Capricorn and 7th house, also afflicting natal MERCURY, further adding to the angst. From November 1981 to October 1982, transit SATURN then afflicted its natal placement, while Jupiter became conjunct natal KETU in Libra and the 4th house. This is consistent with out expectation that a contraction in economic growth would have taken place in late 1981 and early 1982, with preceeding and following quarters showing volatile and low growth. PREDICTION Looking ahead, we know that sub-period lord is afflicting Saturn. As Jupiter is 6th lord, it is financial instability that is reducing the growth. As Jupiter is itself not afflicted, inflation is not the problem at this time. Moreover, the economic growth is not feeding back to reduce financial stability further. Saturn's aspect to its own position in late 2008 and early 2009 may have an effect to reduce growth some, but it ends before the Saturn period begins in February 2009. It seems that the aspects in the summer of 2010 point to an economic contraction with also inflation being a problem, as transit Saturn and transit Jupiter will be in opposition aspect and both of them also then afflicting natal Jupiter.
