Dow closes at five year low (CNN) -- Sliding global stock markets continued to reflect wider economic concerns Wednesday with both U.S. and European indexes enduring punishing sessions following losses in Asia. General Motors' Detroit headquarters. Concerns over the U.S. auto industry's future has added to economic uncertainty. The Dow Jones in New York closed below 8,000 for the first time since March 2003, according to early tallies, as investor confidence dried up amid ongoing worries about the economy and the future of the auto industry. The Nasdaq and S & P both dropped more than 6 percent -- the Dow drop was about 5 percent. Wall Street's morning slide triggered selloffs in Europe where London's FTSE and Paris' CAC were closed down around 4 percent and Frankfurt's DAX was down more than 5 percent.
