Dear friends,

 

One of the uses of astrology, and a very important one, is the selection of auspicious times for important deeds.

 

In the book "From Colony to Superpower" by George C. Herring (Oxford 2008), there is the following quote:

 

"The INF Treaty was signed with great fanfare in Washington at 1:45 PM on December 8, 1987, a time deemed especially propitious, it was later learned by Nancy Reagan's astrologer. [President Ronald] Regan called it "a grand historical moment". pg. 897.

 

INF stands for Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces and the INF treaty entailed major cuts in nuclear weapons stores in the USA and Soviet Union. The treaty is considered an important stepping stone for the cause of ending the Cold War that existed between the USA and the Soviet Union in the post WWII period. The reconcilliation between the USA and USSR from the mid 1980s set the stage for Gorbachev to reform the Soviet policy towards the Eastern-block countries in 1988 and ultimately bring about the end of Soviet communism there in 1989-90 as well as that of the Soviet Union itself in the early 1990s.

 

In any event, the above description is also interesting for a number of other reasons.

 

1. The President of the USA consulted an astrologer (albeit through his wife).

2. On the advice of the astrologer, a time was selected for signing an important international treaty.

3. The "propitious time" is not really auspicious when examined with the Systems Approach.

 

I attach the chart for this event. We can see that the Jupiter-Rahu period is operating. The sign Pisces is rising, with Sun, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu as functional malefics. As this ascendant has more functional malefic planets, it is rearly the source of an auspicious time. The major period lord, 10th lord Jupiter, is in old age conjunct the ascendant. This by itself is the best feature of the chart. Functional malefic Rahu is in the 1st house aspecting 5th lord Moon in the 5th house. This suggests scope for manipulation concerning 5th house issues. 2nd lord Mars is badly placed in the 8th house, suggesting obstacles for the status of the event. 6th lord Sun and 12th lord Saturn are conjunct 9th house MEP aspecting the 3rd house, and 6th house and 11th house by Saturn. This suggest mulitple problems regarding these houses. 8th lord Venus is in the 10th house, suggesting obstacles for the public enterprise that the

treaty deals with. Surely, such a chart is not considered auspicious as per SA.

 

Interestingly, in the SAMVA USA chart at that time, 6th lord Jupiter was afflicted by transit Rahu in Pisces, 8th lord Saturn was afflicted by transit 8th lord Saturn in Scorpio and 6th lord Jupiter in Pisces. 1st lord Moon was afflicted by transit Ketu in the 3rd house. Surely, this would have been a karmically dangerous time for the USA. In any event, the treaty had no lasting damage on the USA. It probably sacrificed old stocks of weapons and the real change took place in the USSR.

Surely, this would have been a karmically dangerous time for the USA. In any event, the treaty had no lasting damage on the USA.

 

On the contrary, it marks a HUGE step foward for the US. Where does the SA chart show this?

Hello Jose,

 

There is no contradiction. I was referring to the INF Treaty chart and the transits in the SAMVA USA chart at the time. The steady progress of the USA is in the strong placements of many planets in the SAMVA USA chart. In this regard, an emphasis should be placed on the placement of the Sun as 2nd lord of status on the most effective point of the 7th house of foreign policy. To this we could add that the opportunity granted to the Soviet Union to overhaul its socio-political arrangements and international relations in a peacful way in the 1980s and 1990s, gave birth to many free countries in Eastern- and Central-Europe. However, Russia seems to be having trouble finding its way in the present geo-political architechture. It's new form of state-oligarchy (e.g. http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=23965 or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_oligarch) seems to be ill at ease with the neo-liberal or democratic market-based order the US has spearheaded around the world. As a result, the Russian government, having (re)gained some of the imperial might of the Soviet Union, seems to be engaged in nation-building by applying pressure on its now

pro-Europe or pro-USA border states, which it formerly controlled, or has resorted to economic and military cooperation with states like Iran, Cuba or Venezuela, which have adopted a type of state-socialism that is anti-thetical to the US order or interests. In a sense, it seems to be getting back at the USA, by throwing its weight around in countries also in the back yard of the USA. Interesting times.
