The recession in the USA and elsewhere

The current recession in the USA is shaping up to be the worst post-war contraction on record, with repercussions for the rest of the world.

 

The source of the crisis is reckless lending practices in the USA and elsewhere. Real gross domestic product (GDP) began contracting in the third quarter of 2008. It is now reported to have contracted by -6% at an annualized pace in the first quarter of 2009 (http://www.bea.gov/newsreleases/national/gdp/gdpnewsrelease.htm). A drop of this size has not been since the 1950s and the recessionary trend is spreading internationally with a significant decline in investment, industrial production and international trade. The result has been a steady rise in

unemployment.

 

Unlike the developments in 1998, when transit Saturn in Aries under aspect from transit Rahu in Leo sparked a global financial crisis, but with less impact on the economic growth and unemployment, this crisis is explained by period and transit dynamics in the SAMVA USA chart and in other nations, where authentic horoscopes exist, including in the UK. The severity of the recession is, however, unusual.

 

In the SAMVA USA chart, the severity is easily explained by the Venus – Jupiter period, which brought speculation in the housing market to a head, with difficult aspects involving e.g.

a) Transit stationary Ketu aspect to natal 4th lord Venus in early 2007, which punctured the bubble

b) Transit 6th lord Jupiter aspect to transit/natal 8th lord Saturn in 2007 and 2008, which deepened the crisis. (Transit Saturn also aspected natal 2nd lord Sun in 2007).

c) Natal Rahu afflicting (b) in September 2008, creating outright panic

d) Natal Saturn afflicting transit Saturn in late 2008 and early 2009, accompanied by rise in unemployment

 

Since February 2009, the Venus – Saturn period has been operating and currently transit 8th lord Saturn is conjunct the MEP of the 2nd house, while transit 6th lord Jupiter is weak in transit.

Transit Rahu at 6° Capricorn will now afflict natal 1st lord Moon into September. This aspect could be associated with dry weather conditions and crop failure.

 

It has been predicted the economic situation will begin to improve in the autumn of 2009, after transit Saturn moves into Virgo and 3rd house – although the stationary affliction of transit 6th lord Jupiter to natal 2nd lord Sun at that time may keep financial concerns alive at that time.
