Dear friends,

In view of 's prediction for US funding on foreign policy issues, notably support to Pakistan, to become a source of contention in the fall (see below) when transit 6th lord Jupiter becomes conjunct natal 2nd lord Sun in the SAMVA USA chart, the following news stories are of great interest:

Thousands flee Pakistan valley as truce crumbles

AFP – May 6, 2009,

MINGORA, Pakistan – Black-turbaned Taliban militants seized government buildings, laid mines and fought security forces Tuesday in the Swat Valley, as fear of a major operation led thousands to pack their belongings on their heads and backs, cram aboard buses and flee the northwestern region. The collapse of a 3-month-old truce with the Taliban means Pakistan will now have to fight to regain control of the Swat Valley, testing the ability of its stretched military and the resolve of civilian leaders who until recently were insisting the insurgents could be partners in peace. The government feared the refugee exodus could reach 500,000.

Pakistani Army Poised for New Push into Swat

The New York Times - May 6, 2009

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Residents flooded out of the Swat Valley by the thousands on Tuesday as the government prepared to mount a new military campaign against Taliban militants and as a much-criticized peace accord with the insurgents fell apart. Residents of Swat were told by the government to leave. People crammed into cars and buses and headed south after the local government told residents to leave Swat before a government military offensive. On Sunday, heavily armed, black-turbaned Taliban fighters seized control of Mingora, Swat’s capital.

Legislation would triple U.S. non-military aid to Pakistan

May 4, 2009 -- Updated 0049 GMT

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- As Pakistani forces continue to battle an advancing Taliban, the leading senators on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee introduced legislation Monday tripling aid to the country. The bill to boost non-military aid to Pakistan was introduced by Sens. John Kerry, left, and Dick Lugar. The Enhanced Partnership with Pakistan Act of 2009, introduced by Sens. John Kerry, D-Massachusetts, and Dick Lugar, R-Indiana, authorizes $7.5 billion in non-military aid to Pakistan over the next five years to foster economic growth and development, and another $7.5 billion for the following five years. The $1.5 billion per year would triple U.S. non-military aid levels, currently at $500 million per year. The legislation also would separate military from non-military aid, promising that economic aid "is no longer the poor cousin to military aid."

Dear friends,

The news coming out of Pakistan sounds a bit alarming. If the Taliban extremists take over the country, it could make the region more unstable. That said, I don´t know what the odds of that happening are given Pakistan's history as a democracy with a well equipped military.

Pakistan 'fighting for survival'

Pakistan's military is fighting "for the survival of the country" against Taleban militants in the Swat valley, its prime minister says. Yusuf Raza Gilani was speaking as the army tried to retake Swat's main town, Mingora, where a curfew is in force.

The government signed a peace agreement with the Swat Taleban in February, allowing Sharia law there, which was heavily criticised by Washington.

The militants then moved towards the capital, Islamabad.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8041364.stm
