Hello list,

Another perfect landing by the space shuttle - in California. The flight was diverted from Florida due to storms there. One has to admire these brave and competent folks.

Hello list,

There is more information about the possible landing times today.

Friday Landing Opportunities in Florida and California

Mission Control has called off Thursday's final space shuttle landing opportunity at Kennedy Space Center due to unstable weather conditions. Two more Discovery landing opportunities are available Friday at Kennedy Space Center. The first begins with a de-orbit burn at 4:41 p.m. EDT and ends with landing at 5:48 p.m. The second opportunity begins with a de-orbit burn at 6:17 p.m. with a landing at 7:23 p.m.

At looking at the transits in the SAMVA USA chart for this time frame, we can note that transit 10th lord Mars has advance in the 12th house, to the point that it will be at 16° 41' Gemini later today. In this degree, Mars receives the challenging aspect of natal Ketu at 17° 47's Libra/H4. Transit Mars is weakened by bad placement but the aspect is not yet exact, being just outside 1° orb. The natal strength of Mars, which rules e.g. courage and people of martial temperament and attributes, is helpful to protect against setbacks. I think I overlooked this aspect in my initial assessment following the launch. Transit Ketu, while no longer stationary, is now at 4° 56' Cancer, where it more closely afflicts natal 6th lord Jupiter at 4° 25' Scorpio/H5. A transit aspect between two malefics does not always produce setbacks, in this case sudden accidents, but can certainly cause strain. Transit 8th

lord Saturn, and sub-period lord in the chart, is at 0° 16' Virgo and is now within the 5° orb aspect of transit Rahu and with an almost 4° aspect to natal Jupiter. Fortunately, these aspects are still wide. Transit 2nd lord Sun is at 25° 21' Leo/H2 where it receives an aspect from natal Saturn at 26° 46' Scorpio/H5. The natal strength protects, but transit 6th lord Jupiter is at 24° 43' Capricorn/H7, where it is within one degree orb of its conjunction with natal Sun at 23° 44' Capricorn. This suggests strain for the indications of the Sun and 2nd house at this time, but it could find expression in other areas of the national life. Finally, transit 1st lord Moon will be around 23° Taurus where it receives the aspect of natal Saturn. Fortunately, this aspect is not exact at the proposed landing times. The overall transit picture at the time of these landing times suggests strain, but we should

also keep the launch chart in mind. Again, it is often found that at the times of such missions, the by far the largest part of which are successful, there are stressful aspects which indicate the inherent risks of the endeavours.

Hello list,

In considering the astrological outlook for the Shuttle mission that blasted off in late August, the SAMVA USA chart was examined. It indicated risks, but strength of Sun and Venus in transit suggested the mission would go well. However, when looking at the launch chart, the picture there was not so helpful and the following prediction was made on the basis of that chart:

"Overall, this chart suggests difficulties will be encountered during the mission."

Now we have news that:

a) the landing time on Thursday was scrubbed due to bad weather. Another landing is scheduled for today.

b) the shuttle crew had to do an evasive maneuvre to avoid a piece of debris from an earlier mission.

Shuttle Discovery landing scrubbed for Thursday

updated 4 hours, 40 minutes ago

(CNN) -- The space shuttle Discovery will stay aloft another day after NASA mission managers scrubbed its second and final opportunity to land Thursday, citing bad weather near Kennedy Space Center in Florida . The landing was scrubbed citing bad weather near Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Thursday. The next landing opportunity for Discovery will come shortly before 6 p.m. ET on Friday, officials said. That landing would also take place in Florida . The shuttle initially was set to land at 7:05 p.m. ET Thursday. After the crew woke up to the Beatles' "Good Day Sunshine," Discovery performed an evasive maneuver at 12:02 p.m. ET to avoid an unidentified piece of debris. Although NASA officials didn't know the precise nature of the object, the debris is believed to be from the mission's third spacewalk. The seven astronauts are wrapping up a 13-day mission to the

international space station, where the crew made repairs and delivered supplies.

While a delay in the landing time is not out of the ordinary, evading a piece of orbital debris is. Hopefully the landing today takes place and goes well.

Hello list members,

After studying this event in terms of the SAMVA USA chart, I just now looked at the launch (prasna) chart for this event. This particular chart is not helpful.

Ketu-Ketu period is operating in the 6° 11 Taurus rising chart, with Ketu at 5° 45' Cancer on the MEP of the 3rd house. As 3rd lord Moon is in deep infancy in the 8th house, these placements suggests that there is scope for some sudden even violent event associated with the efforts or initiatives of the mission. It does not help that Ketu mutally afflicts 6th lord Venus at 8° 58' Cancer. As the conjunction with Venus is outside 2° orb, it lessens the negative additional influence associated with Venus. That said, Ketu's own placement is a concern. We can also note that 12th lord Mars at 8° 11' Gemini afflicts the 2nd house MEP, 5th house, 8th and 9th house, but outside of a 2° orb, which reduces the negative influence. Nevertheless, the aspect of Mars to these houses has implications for Rahu at 5° 45' Capricorn/H9 which aspects 5th lord Mercury at 8° 41' Virgo/H5. Moreover, Mars also closely

afflicts Mercury. The 4th lord Sun is a strong and potentially redeeming factor in this chart, but nevertheless it does not seem to help offset the afflictions seen.

Overall, this chart suggests difficulties will be encountered during the mission. The question is to what extent the launch chart on the one hand and the SAMVA USA chart influence on the other hand indicative for the overall success of the mission.

Hello list,

Nasa has launched the US shuttle Discovery for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS), with seven astronauts on board. It lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 2359 EDT Friday (0359 GMT Saturday). http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8228089.stm

At the launch of the space flight, there were some transit afflictions seen in the SAMVA USA chart.

1. Two separating aspects involve sub-period lord, Saturn, as 8th lord in the chart, to

- transit 6th lord Jupiter in Capricorn/H7

- transit 8th lord Saturn in Leo/H2

Such aspects highlight the dangers or risks involved in all such missions. Fortunately, these aspects are separating in the lift-off chart and during the mission flight.

However, during the 13 day mission, there are also two applying aspects,

- transit Ketu to natal 6th lord Jupiter

- transit 6th lord Jupiter to natal 2nd lord Sun

These aspects are still not exact at the time of landing, which is good.

There will also be two new aspects of note involving Saturn at the close of the mission. The Shuttle is scheduled to land at 7:09 p.m. on September 10, 2009. At that time, transit Saturn will have entered the sign Virgo and 3rd house of the SAMVA USA chart. At that time Saturn will be at 0° 05' Virgo, where it will be in deep infancy but well placed and its dispositor Mercury will be strong and unafflicted in transit, which is good. Saturn will at that time have entered

- the aspect from transit Rahu at 4° 59' Capricorn/H7.

- an aspect to natal 6th lord Jupiter at 4° 25' Scorpio*.

Fortunately, these aspects are wide although Saturn is at maximum weakness in transit at the time.

Transit Sun and Venus are also strong in transit at that time.

Overall, this suggests the mission will go well while the many transit afflictions signifying the risks.

*) This aspect becomes exact on October 14, 2009, when it may give some foretaste of what to expect in mid 2010 when transit Saturn again closely aspects natal Jupiter (while also opposing transit Jupiter in early Pisces).
