Military aircraft collide and crash: 9 dead

A C-130 and the Marine Corps AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter collided over the Pacific Ocean at 7:10 p.m on Thursday Oct. 29, 2009 as the Coast Guard was conducting a search operation for a missing boater. The Marine helicopter was flying in formation with another Cobra helicopter and two transports on a nighttime training exercise. 9 people were killed in the incident.

SAN DIEGO - The search for eight men and a woman missing in the midair collision of a Coast Guard search plane and a Marine Corps helicopter ended today, the U.S. Coast Guard announced today. A USCG helicopter at first light went to the scene of Thursday's crash near San Clemente Island for the final hunt for survivors but returned empty- handed around 10 a.m., Petty Officer Henry Dunphy said.
