Rahu, the lord of deception and manipulation is conjunct the MEP of the 10th house of government, from where it aspects the 2nd house of wealth and status, 4th house of communal harmony, 6th house of conflict. During the summer of 1982 Rahu was conjunct the MEP of the 12th house of foreign countries, smuggling and losses, from where it aspected Ketu and houses 4, 6 and 8. Likewise, Ketu was in the 6th house, aspecting the 10th, 12th and 2nd houses. In the Fall, transit Saturn aspected its own placement. The following events transpired:

 

FOREIGN POLICY

 

USA gets diplomatically involved in the Falklands War between UK and Argentina, which was fought in May and June. The US government imposes trade sanctions against Argentina, which are lifted on July 12th, after the war ends

Under President Reagan, US relations with the Soviet Union, under Leonid Breshnev, become ever more strained.

 

UNABOMBER (Rahu in 12th house aspects Ketu in 4th)

 

May 5, Janet Smith, a secretary, was injured when a bomb package was opened at Vanderbilt Univ.

Jul 2, A bomb exploded in the hands of Prof. Diogenes Angelakos (d.1997 at 77) in Berkeley. It was later attributed to the Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski.

 

FINANCE (special: Jupiter was stationary conjunct Ketu in February and March)

 

May, Drysdale Government Securities, officially started in February 1982, defaulted on $160 million it owed to Chase Manhattan and ultimately cost the bank $270 million.

Jul 5, Penn Square Bank of Oklahoma went bankrupt as wildcat oil well loans went bad.

Aug 12, The US stock market bottomed and rose 35% by the end of the year. Theorist Robert S. Prechter predicted that the market would take off from its 800 levels.

 

ECONOMY (Recession and unemployment surge during transit Saturn-to-natal Saturn aspect and transit Jupiter- transit Rahu aspect)

 

The “1982 Recession†begins and by Fall, the nation sinks into its worst recession since the Great Depression. Reagan fears budget deficits as high as $200 billion.

On November 1, more than 9 million Americans, or 10.4 per cent of the labour force, are officially unemployed.

"The pipeline software that was to run the pumps, turbines and valves was programmed to go haywire," writes Reed, "to reset pump speeds and valve settings to produce pressures far beyond those acceptable to the pipeline joints and welds. The result was the most monumental non-nuclear explosion and fire ever seen from space."

 

POLITICAL CRIME (Ketu in 6th and Rahu in 12th)

 

Jul 3, Mumia Abu-Jamal (b.1954), radio reporter and former Black Panther, was convicted for the 1981 murder of police officer Daniel Faulkner in Pittsburgh.

August 9, John Hinckley, who shot President Reagan, was sentenced to be indefinitely committed to a mental hospital (innocent by reason of insanity).

 

AIR DISASTERS (Nodal affliction of the 6th house, where Venus resides, was the strongest during these months)

 

Jul 9, A Pan Am Boeing 727 crashed in Kenner, La., killing all 145 people aboard and eight people on the ground.

Aug 11, Pan Am flight 830 from Tokyo to Honolulu was bombed. One boy was killed and 15 people were injured.

 

ACCIDENTS (Ketu influence on Venus. Note also foreign nature of accidents with Rahu in 12th in aspect to 6th lord Jupiter in 4th)

 

Jul 23, Actor Vic Morrow and two child actors were killed when a helicopter crashed on top of them during filming of a Vietnam War scene for "Twilight Zone: The Movie."

Sep 14, Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly American actress Grace Kelly, died at age 52 of injuries from a car crash the day before.

In 2010 a stationary transit-to-natal nodal affliction will be taking place along with other afflictions.

 

Such an aspect was also seen in 1945, when e.g. the belowed President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died and the US was yet to unleash death and destruction on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in a desperate bid to end WW II.

 

"On the afternoon of April 12, Roosevelt said, "I have a terrific headache." He collapsed, unconscious, and was carried into his bedroom. The president's attending cardiologist, Dr. Howard Bruenn, diagnosed a massive cerebral hemorrhage (stroke). At 3:35 p.m. that day, Roosevelt died...Roosevelt's death was met with shock and grief across the U.S. and around the world. His declining health had not been known to the general public. Roosevelt had been president for more than 12 years, longer than any other person, and had led the country through some of its greatest crises to the impending defeat of Nazi Germany and to within sight of the defeat of Japan as well."

Jupiter-Venus period was operating and the attached chart shows the transit-to-natal nodal action with Rahu on the MEP of the 12th house and Ketu on the MEP of the 6th house. During the spring, when FDR died, there was an utter weakness of all the FB's: 2nd lord Sun was in advanced old age in Pisces, while 3rd lord Mercury, 1st lord Moon and 4th lord Venus were weak in Aries and 10th house. Transit Ketu was afflicting the 10th house of the government. The dispositor of Mercury, Moon and Venus was Mars, which was badly placed and weak and afflicted in the 8th house, while its dispositor, 8th lord Saturn, was badly placed and weak in the afflicted 12th house. Finally, 6th lord Jupiter was stationary under the natal affliction of 8th lord Saturn and was itself stationary afflicting natal 4th lord Venus.

 

Importantly, the multiple transit strain in the summer resulted in decision by the Americans to try to convince the Japanese generals to end the war by visiting utter destruction on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August of 1945.

 

"During the final stages of World War II in 1945, the United States conducted two atomic bombings against Japan in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki . After six months of intense strategic fire-bombing of 67 Japanese cities the Hirohito regime ignored an ultimatum given by the Potsdam Declaration. By executive order of President Harry S. Truman the U.S. dropped the nuclear weapon Little Boy on the city of Hiroshima on Monday, August 6, 1945, followed by the detonation of the bomb Fat Man over Nagasaki on August 9. These are the only attacks with nuclear weapons in the history of warfare. The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki by the end of 1945, with roughly half of those deaths occurring on the days of the bombings. Amongst these, 15–20% died from injuries or the combined effects of flash burns, trauma, and

radiation burns, compounded by illness, malnutrition and radiation sickness. Since then, more have died from leukemia (231 observed) and solid cancers (334 observed) attributed to exposure to radiation released by the bombs. In both cities, most of the dead were civilians. Six days after the detonation over Nagasaki , on August 15, Japan announced its surrender to the Allied Powers, signing the Instrument of Surrender on September 2, officially ending the Pacific War and therefore World War II. Germany had signed its unavoidable Instrument of Surrender on May 7, ending the war in Europe . The bombings led, in part, to post-war Japan adopting Three Non-Nuclear Principles, forbidding the nation from nuclear armament."

There has been much debate over the bombings.

"Supporters of the bombings generally assert that they caused the Japanese surrender, preventing massive casualties on both sides in the planned invasion of Japan : Kyūshū was to be invaded in October 1945 and Honshū five months later. Some estimate Allied forces would have suffered 1 million casualties in such a scenario, while Japanese casualties would have been in the millions. Others who oppose the bombings argue that it was simply an extension of the already fierce conventional bombing campaign and, therefore, militarily unnecessary, inherently immoral, a war crime, or a form of state terrorism."

 

To this we could perhaps add that the Japanese were viewed as having started the war with a destructive surprise attack on the US fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, USA, on December 6, 1941. That, and the perceived cruelty of the Japanese soldiers in the war, including their mal-treatment of Prisoners of War, did likely not help them when the US government decided to end the war by terrible means.
