Northern California hit by 5.9 earthquake

Residents of Northern California's Humboldt County were rocked by a

magnitude-5.9 earthquake Thursday, but authorities said there were no immediate

reports of major injury or damage.

 

The region was hit with a magnitude-6.5 quake Jan. 9 that caused more than $40

million in damage and one serious injury. The U.S. Geological Survey said

Thursday's quake struck almost 50 miles west of Eureka. The shaking was felt

within a 150-mile radius, stretching into southern Oregon, the USGS said. Crews

in Eureka were checking on structures damaged in the earlier quake.
