Explosion At Middletown Power Plant

MIDDLETOWN - Witnesses and emergency response authorities said as many as 100 people were injured and an undetermined number may have died when a massive explosion, which homeowners more than 10 miles away and mistook for an earth quake, blew up a power plant being built on the Connecticut River in the southern section of Middletown.

Power plant explodes; at least two dead

A gas-fired power plant on the River Road in Middletown exploded earlier today. At least two are dead and several have life-threatening injuries, we are told. There are mass casualties, as many as 75 people injured. There were about 100 people inside the plant today where they were supposed to be testing some upgrades made recently to the facility. About 30 ambulances have responded to the scene, as well as the two Lifestar helicopters.

(CNN) -- At least two people were killed Sunday in an explosion at a Connecticut power plant, police said. Two people have been confirmed dead, said Middletown, Connecticut, police Sgt. Chuck Jacobucci, but authorities expect the number to rise since they are still searching for people.More than 100 emergency service units, including fire, police and emergency management, were responding, he said. Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, a suburb of Hartford, Connecticut, said it was receiving patients from the blast, which occurred about 11:30 a.m.

Power Plant Explosion in Middletown; reports of numerous casualties

We're hearing reports of an explosion of a gas line by the Kleen Energy plant on River Road. All of Middletown's fire departments are working at the scene, and Durham, Middlefield, Portland and Cromwell fire departments have been called in to assist. There are reports of numerous casualties.

Kleen Energy

The Kleen Energy power plant project is typical of High Steel’s increasing involvement in the power and energy sector. Berlin Steel of Massachusetts took the lead bidding the complete steel fabrication package, which totaled approximately 5,000 tons. Berlin involved High Steel early in the budgeting phase, and the two companies worked closely together through the bidding process. Contractor O & G Industries, Inc. awarded Berlin the fabrication contract, with High Steel as a subcontractor. High Steel’s scope involved large roof girders, crane girders, and several very large transfer girders for a total of 750 tons of built-up sections. Kleen Energy Systems, LLC’s new 620 MW Combined Cycle Electric Generating Facility is located in Middletown, Connecticut. Unlike older power plants that are less than 30 percent efficient, the new gas-fired, combined cycle power plant is designed to operate at over 60 percent efficiency. The combined cycle process achieves this increased efficiency by sending waste heat from the gas turbine generator, that would normally be lost, to a steam turbine to generate even more electricity. The plant is expected to come on line by June 1, 2010.
