Predictions for the USA in 2010 (December 30, 2009) "Due to adverse transit influences, strains are expected in the housing market and for domestic peace at the beginning of the year." http://cosmologer.blogspot.com/2009/12/predictions-for-usa-in-2010.html Well, things have been very difficult for many homeowners, with many being evicted due to failure to pay their mortgages. Some have now evidently resorted to taking their lives rather than suffer an eviction. Homeowners Facing Foreclosure Take Own Lives Mar 23, 2010 7:19 pm US/EasternThe foreclosure crisis in Philadelphia is now becoming a matter of life and death. Eyewitness News has learned that in the past month, two homeowners took their own lives before sheriff's deputies arrived to tell them that they were being evicted. On March 5, deputies arriving to post an eviction notice on Lynda Clark's South Philadelphia home found she had hung herself. "It's devastating for everyone. We're not even family members and it's just devastating to us," Captain Albert Innaurato of the Philadelphia Sheriff's Office said. Less than three weeks later, owner Gregory Bellows shot and killed himself shortly before deputies arrived to evict him from his Roxborough home. http://cbs3.com/local/Foreclosure.Suicide.Philadelphia.2.1584571.html This is not only sad but the foreclosure system appears cruel. Guest guest
Hello dear Lisa, Yes it is, especially sad during an economic downturn when many lose their livelihood and their ability to hold on to their houses. In some countries, a debtors grace period has been adopted where loan delinquencies, due to exceptionally difficult economic conditions, are not enforced through focreclosure. Rather, a lengthening of the loans is tried, with an aim to make the loan repayment more manageable during the downturn. Some loss writeoffs by the banks are also necessary. The key element is that housing constitutes a human right, where normal contractual provisions cannot be enforced in exceptionally difficult times. Such measures may add to the difficulty of the banks in the short term but over the longer horizon it may be better for all concerned. Certainly, it is a more humane solution.
