Some writers take a sensational view. Here is one such article that reflects a concern over the occurrence of a "low probability, mass impact" event in the Mideast.

By comparison, the US defense establishment, headed by William Gates, believes Iran is at least one year away from producing a nuclear bomb. He also has suggests that terrorists have little chance of getting their hands on one, either through illicit means or by putting it together without being detected. At the same time, it is well known that Al-Queda is intent on obtaining a nuclear bomb. The following news item from Israel is not going to make anyone feel easy about the present situation:

This warning, along with an announcement that Iran would join the world's nuclear club within a month, raised the pitch of Iranian anti-US rhetoric to a new high Tuesday, April 13, as 47 world leaders gathered in Washington for President Barack Obama's Nuclear Security Summit. The statement published by Kayhan said: "If the US strikes Iran with nuclear weapons, there are elements which will respond with nuclear blasts in the centers of America's main cities." For the first time, debkafile's military sources report, Tehran indicated the possibility of passing nuclear devices to terrorists capable of striking inside the United States.

The scope for harm in the present tense situation in the Mideast may help to explain why President Obama is so resolute to bring a durable peace to the region. Let's hope he succeeds.

JERUSALEM – Israel issued an "urgent" warning Tuesday to its citizens to leave Egypt's Sinai Peninsula immediately citing "concrete evidence of an expected terrorist attempt to kidnap Israelis in Sinai." The statement from the Israeli prime minister's anti-terror office took the unusual step of calling on families of Israelis visiting the Sinai to establish contact with them.
