Dear Suresh,

You have a fantastic style of writing and are an excellent storyteller. Keep it up.

What you wrote is fascinating. Nimittas (or omens) are a very important aspect of astrology as practiced by the older generation. My father, for example, puts much emphasis on them. People like my father and Sanjay ji are rare and our new generation is increasingly formula driven.

I am a layman when it comes to nimittas, but there are times when there are such strong nimittas that even I cannot miss! I'll give an example.

I was looking for a job change in June-July 2003 and got a good offer which I accepted. I gave a two-week notice at the company I was working at. When I was a couple of days away from joining the new job, a couple of new opportunities came up and seemed like more perfect fits for my background. While the job I had accepted was also a good fit, it required expanding a little bit into a related field. I was in two minds regarding whether to respond to the new opportunities or to stand by my commitment.

That night, I did my pooja and sat down for dinner. I was thinking of my chart and of what I should do. There was news coming on Zee TV (an Indian satellite channel). I didn't want to see the news and so reached out for the remote to switch the channel. Exactly at that time, the news program showed a clip from a festival/ritual at MahaaKaaleshwar temple at Ujjain! They showed the Shiva Lingam (idol), its abhishekam (bathing) with milk etc and then a procession of the deity's idol.

This may not seem to you like a nimitta regarding the burning question in my mind, unless you know something about my natal chart. My dasamsa chart (D-10) has Virgo lagna. Saturn is the 5th lord. The Jyotirlinga form of Shiva corresponding to the 5th lord of D-10 is known to give success and luck in career. The Jyotirlinga corresponding to Saturn is MahaaKaaleshwara at Ujjain. I pray to Him everyday with "Om Namassivaaya Namah Om Kaaleshwaraaya".

At the time I was thinking of changing TV channel, MahaaKaaleshwara's idol, which symbolizes success in career in my case, appeared in the TV channel, forcing me not to switch. All this happened when I was thinking of whether stick to the new job I accepted or consider other opportunities. This is a very clear nimitta (omen) showing that there was success for me in not considering other opportunities and sticking to this job. Without looking at my chart further or creating a prasna chart, I stuck to my decision. Hopefully, the analysis will prove right.

But not all nimittas are as straight-forward and as easy to decode.

Sometime back, a person I held in respect was accused of swindling some people of large amounts of money. After my pooja oneday, doubt entered my mind and I was wondering if the accusations had any merit. I was thinking of the person's chart. As I was thinking, the fire in the neeraajanam (camphor-lit fire offered at the end of a pooja) disappeared by itself for no reason. There was no wind as it was a closed room. There was still camphor left and the fire would've normally continued a little longer. Clearly, it was a nimitta for me, but what did it mean?

Fire symbolizes dharma (the elements fire, earth, air and water stand for dharma, artha, kaama and moksha respectively). The disappearance of fire shows breaking of dharma. It happened for no apparent reason. So it shows a badhaka related issue. One possibility is that the gentleman I was thinking of broke dharma due to his badhaka. But, can I be sure?

Actually, I concluded by interpreting this to mean that *I* was breaking *my* dharma by even thinking about the issue. I preferred to see the disappearance of fire (an inauspicious event) as a warning from God to me rather than an as an answer from Him to my question. Though there is no way I can be certain, I concluded that I was not supposed to analyze the issue further and closed it.

Thus, some nimittas can be tricky to interpret.

But, your mail is timely. I think our generation should study paranormal/psychic aspects of astrology, such as nimittas, along with analytical aspects, such as dasas, transits, annual charts etc. Each aspect of astrology has an importance of its own.
