Guest guest
|| Brihaspatim Varenyam || Dear Jyotishas, In web document (ref: http://www.livermoretemple.org/hints/library/temple/pdf/BJ_Navagraha.p df ) it gives various shapes/symbols for each planet Like Sun: circle with radiating lines. Moon: Rectangle. Mars: Isosceles Triangle with apex up. Mercury: Horizontal Spear/arrow pointed right. Jupiter: Square Venus: Pentagonal shape with two right angles. pointed right. Saturn: Bow and Arrow. Rahu: A trapezoidal shape (like the rice husk removing pan) Ketu: A Flag. Some Shapes like the flag for ketu, sun etc is known. But I am not aware of the other shapes. Can somebody give reference, or explain the significance of the diagrams, what could be use for predictive or other purpose of it. Thank you Warm regards S. Guest guest
Namaste, Those of you who were at my house last Friday for Satya Narayana vratam (on the occasion of Kartika Pournima) would've noticed that I had prepared planetary regions in the shapes mentioned below and invoked each planet in its region. For example, the mantras refer to invoking Mars in a " trikonaakaara mandala " (triangular region) in the southern direction from Sun. They refer to invoking Venus in a " panchakonaakaara mandala " (pentagonal region) in the eastern direction from Sun. And so on. But I notice a couple of disrepancies. Moon is said to be in a " sama chaturasra mandala " (square region) and Jupiter in a " deerdha chaturasra mandala " (rectangular region). You have reversed those. Mercury is assigned " baanaakaara mandala " . Some people interpret this as an arrow shape. Some learned elders interpret it simply as a trapezium (or diamond shape - the shape of " kaju katli " sweet :-) ). Saturn is assigned " chaapaakaara mandala " . This is not " bow and arrow " , but just a bow. Some people write an elaborate bow (which looks like Rama's Kodanda) and some people interpret it to just mean a simple arc. Baiscally, these nine are said to be the key geometric shapes. Guest guest
... hamsassoham .. I happened to stumble across some verses related to these planetary symbols. There are differences based on the tradition. The list Narasimha gave corresponds to a list in the Bodhayana Sutras (and is very similar to a verse in Jaimini's Sutras). However, the list in the Vaikhanasa Sutras is quite different (list is in standard graha order). Bodhayana Grihya Sutras: vR^ittamaadityaaya trikoNama~Ngaarakaaya pa~ncakoNaM shukraaya chaturashraM somaaya baaNaM budhaaya diirghachaturashram bR^ihaspataye dhanushshanaishcaraaya raahave shuurpaM ketave dhvajamiti .. Vaikhanasa Grihya Sutras: chaturashram vR^ittam tuTyaakaaraM trikonaM aShTaashrama ardhachandraakaaram vajraakara daNDaakR^iti dhvajaakR^itiiti Sun - Circle (B), Square (V) Moon - Square (B), Circle (V) Mars - Triangle (B), Damaroo shape (V) Mercury - Arrow (B), Triangle (V) Jupiter - Rectangle (B), Octogon (V) Venus - Pentagon (B), Half Moon (V) Saturn - Bow (B), Diamond (V) Rahu - Rice Hush Removing Pan (B), Rod (V) Ketu - Flag (B), Flag (V) ajit pvr108 [pvr] Thursday, November 13, 2003 3:21 PM varahamihira |Sri Varaha| Re: Planetary Symbols Namaste, Those of you who were at my house last Friday for Satya Narayana vratam (on the occasion of Kartika Pournima) would've noticed that I had prepared planetary regions in the shapes mentioned below and invoked each planet in its region.
