Dear Chandrashekhar,

I agree with Mandi being same with Gulik. The translation of Mandi is:

'son of Manda' while Manda is another name for Shani. Gulik is the son of

Shani, so there are one and the same. However, I have a doubt in the

calculation of Mandi-Gulik. In Jaimini Sutras Sanjay Rath has described

Gulik as being the end of Saturn's portion of day or night respectively,

yet later on I see in his books that he changed to the opinion of

beginning of Saturn's portion and makes a distinction between Gulik and

Mandi. Maybe Sanjay Rath could enlighten us further on this?

dear dhira,

because in uttara kalmitra, there is a word 'antyasho' used for gulika which caused the whole confusion that gulika may b the end point of the arc. but this is not in in accordance with bphs & other jatak granths.

so it is considered to b intialpoint of saturn's arc as given in other jatak granths.

though we consider gk & mandi to b same, there is just a subtle diffrence that gulika is beginning point & mandi is the mid point. in my view any planet on that arc would b afflcted, and as it gets close to mid point'mandi', affliction is at peak. any planet which is not on this arc, & in the same sign would hardly show any signs of affliction.

j hora by default takes gulika as the initial point.

regards

prashant
