dear dhira,

1)its given in chapter3, slokas 66-70. here 66-69 slokas describe how to calculate upagrahas in general, describe rest of the upagrahs & their names.

2)for gulika 's calculation, a separate sloka is given. there it is clearly mentioned that gulika is the ascending degrees of the saturn's arc.(since it is seprately given , scholars belive only gulika relates to the ascending degrees, rest of the upagrahas r mid-points)

3)in chapter 4 of bphs, where "mandi" is used to calculate nisheka lagna , there longitude of saturn, mandi, moon, cusps, 9th & 10th houses r required. in vedic astrology, cusp is always the middle point of the bhava where the maximum effect of the bhava is contenetrated. bphs syas, that effect of the planet would commence at on its placement at the initial point of the bhava, maximum in the middle & zero on the ending moment. according to bphhs, planets on the sandhi start giving effect of the enxt bhava. here, it indicates mandi should b the cusp as all other cusp factors r considered for the calculation of nisheka lagna. so, it has been assumed for mandi that it is the mid-point of the arc.

4) now their phala:

since gulika is just the ascending degrees, so it acts like slow poison. planets gets poisoned, diseased & intoxicated: whereas, mandi is destroyer of all karma phala. here maximum effect is concentrated.

5)the other name for gulika is sanisuta(sani's son).

mandi is also referred to yamatmaja, pranahara & atipapi.

6)their use in divisionals:

one should b very careful in using gulika & mandi in rasi as well as divisionals.

a) even if a planet is in the same sign with gk/mandi, it will not b considered afficted if its not in the arc.

b) vice-versa. a plnet will b considered afflicted if its in the arc. now u see, that precisely this the reason why mandi & gulika both r not generally referred simulatneously in a single text. because what matters is the position in the arc. the planet which is very close to mid-point or"mandi" will b severely affliicted. this sounds very logical also.

c)wherever classic texts have refrred to gulika , they have reffered to the whole arc or gulika kaal, since whole arc causes affliction.

c)in divisionals, gulika & mandi both get separated. it can cause a lot of confusion.

it s not sensible to leave other points, & see only these two points. if u see the whole arc in d-9, it would stretch to 7 navamsas. so, better see in d-1 first, which planets & point of nativity r afflicted & then proceed to divisionals. alternately one can experiment with mandi in d-cahrts & see the results. of course there r slokas which refer to mandi's position in divisionals.

interstingly, mr. rao has quoted a jaimini sutra, which says

Jaimini Sutras: ADHYAYA 1- PADA 2SU. 29. - Sagulike vishado vishahato va. If the Karaka Navamsa falls in Gulikakala or the time governed by Gulika, the person will administer poison to others and kill them or be killed by suchadministrations of poison by others.

now ,we can easily check where the karaka navamsa falls, becuase any/every navmsa is just 3 degrees 20min. so if this 3deg20min falls in gulika kaalam, it will give above mentioned results.

this is my personal opinion, & others might differ.

regards

Dear Prashant,My personal experience though is that it works as well with the end pointof Saturn's arc. It's very mystical, and I guess more research isnecessary. Which are the quotes from BPHS which indicate it to be thestarting and midpoint?Yours,Dhira Krsna dasa,Jyotishahttp://www.radhadesh.com|Om Tat Sat|http://www.varahamihira
