Dear Jyotisha's

I am trying to understand and look for the pattern for the 8 house

calculation that is used for the Rudra/Maheshvara identification.

I have read the sections from Upadesha Sutras, Crux of Vedic

Astrology and Narasimha's contribution in his Vedic astrology

book. Odd Signs and Even signs play a role - As I analyze the 8th

house Odd-footed ( vishamapada) and Even-footed (samapada) also

play a role. Please see my observations below and comment:

1. For movable signs (owned by Brahma) :

Aries, a movable, odd sign and is odd-footed and the eighth from

Aries is Scorpio - yet that would mean Mars, the owner of Lagna and

8th ( life and death) does not work; Sanjay then suggests that if

Mars is in Aries, then use Sagittarius as the 8th. MUST MARS be in

Aries for this rule to apply? OR should Sag ALWAYS be used as the

8th house for a Aries Lagna???

>> Conclusion for MOVABLE: the direction is counted 6 signs

there from; backwards (anti-zodiacally) if Odd-footed, forward

(normal zodiac) if Even-footed.

Question: IF we use Sag as the 8th house for Scorpio and Sco its a

FIXed sign, FIXed is owned by Siva; Siva movement is the 6th

movement -

how do we get to Sag? Is it because Sag is 12th from Scorpio in

an anti-zodiac direction?

2. For Fixed signs ( Owned by Siva)

Taurus, fixed and odd-footed - the eighth there from as suggested by

Sanjay is Gemini and is 12th from Taurus anti- zodiacally

Leo, fixed, even-footed - the eighth there from as suggested from

Sanjay is Cancer - the 12th from Leo in the normal zodiac forward

count.

Scorpio, fixed, odd-footed - the eighth there from as suggested by

Sanjay is Sag - the 12th from Sco in the anti-zodiac count

Aquarius, fixed, and even footed - the eighth there from as

suggested by Sanjay is Cap, the 12th from Aquarius in the anti-

zodiac count, yet both the Lagna and reckoned 8th would have the same

lord ( again life/death) and Sanjay then suggests using Gemini.

>>Conclusion for FIXED: it is the 12th there from. The direction

depends on odd-footed is anti-zodiac direction; even-footed is

normal forward direction.

3. For dual signs (owned by Vishnu)

Gemini - eighth house is Capricorn - and is 8th there from; yet

Virgo's 8th house is reckoned to be Aquarius 8 houses away anti-

zodiacally.

Sag 8th house is Cancer and follows a forward count 8 houses and is

straight forward; Pisces yields Leo as the 8th house, which is anti-

zodiacally 8 houses away.

>>Conclusion for DUAL: for Dual signs, it is 8th there from

either in a zodiac or anti-zodiac direction : The direction (forward

or backward determined by odd-footed or even-footed sign.

Dear Frank,

Rudra is the lord of the 8th house who bestows results as per dharmic

principles. It is determined in sequence for each set of odd and even footed

rasis. The principle of punaragama applies to the first rasi in an even

footed set, and the first count in these sets is anti-zodiacal.

ajit

Odd-Footed Example (Ari, Tau, Gem):

Ari - 8th house from Ari is Sco.

Tau - 8th house from Sco is Gem.

Gem - 8th house from Gem is Cap.

Even-Footed Example (Can, Leo, Vir):

Can - 8th house from Can (AZ) is Sag.

Leo - 8th house from Sag is Can.

Vir - 8th house from Can is Aqu.

Dear Frank,

Here are the calculations for Rudra. I haven't gone through your e-mail in detail so I won't comment. Look at this first and then let me know if there is still some confusion. You must take into account the Vridha Karikas, the exceptions for certain ascendants.

Rudra - Calculations

In the chapter on Longevity (Ch. II, Qtr I) in Upadesa Sutras [Rath], Jaimini tells us how to calculate Rudra and Maheshwara. The stanzas where the rules are to be found are indicated for easy reference. Some of the rules are presented here.

(i) Rudra is the stronger of the lords of the 8th house from the lagna or the 7th (2.1.35). Thus, the stronger of the lords of the 2nd and the 8th from the lagna is Rudra.

· A planet is stronger if it conjoins more planets.

· A planet in exaltation or own rasi is stronger.

· A planet conjoining exalted planets is stronger.

· A planet aspected by more planets by rasi drishti is stronger.

· A planet more advanced in its rasi is stronger.

(ii) If the weaker lord has more malefic conjunctions or aspects, then he can qualify as Rudra (2.1.36).

* For these signs the 8th house from the lord of the sign would have to be taken as the lord of the ascendant and eight house are one and the same thing.

(i) For Aries ascendant, Mars is the lord of the lagna and the 8th house. Hence the 8th from Scorpio, i.e., Sagittarius, must be considered and its lord Jupiter becomes the 8th lord.

(ii) For Libra ascendant, Venus is the lord of the lagna and the 8th house. Hence the 8th from Taurus, i.e., Sagittarius, or Gemini according to Vriddha Karikas, must be considered and that lord becomes the 8th lord.

(iii) For Aquarius ascendant, Capricorn becomes the 8th house (see Table), and thus Saturn is the lord of both lagna and the 8th house. Hence the 8th from Capricorn, i.e., Gemini, must be considered and its lord Mercury becomes the 8th lord.

Here are rules for Maheshwara! There are some additional rules for Rahu and Ketu and these are to be found in MJUS.

Maheshwara – Calculations

(i) The lord of the 8th house from the AK is called Maheshwara.

(ii) If the 8th lord from the AK is exalted or in its own sign, the lord of the 8th or 12th from it, whichever is stronger, becomes Maheshwara.

If 8th lord is exalted or in its own sign loses its sting to kill and delegates its power to another, i.e., the lord of the 8th/12th from the sign where it is placed.

(iii) If Rahu or Ketu become Maheshwara or if Rahu or Ketu is in the 1st or 8th from the AK, or Rahu is the AK itself, the 6th planet or the 6th lord, respectively becomes Maheshwara.

Dear Ajit, Brendan, (et.al)

Thank you for your help...wnated to let you know my intent was

to dig deeper and see the relationhip of HOW we get to the 8th house.

I have seen the reckoner Sanjay has included in his Upadasa Sutra

book, yet wanted to take it apart and really understand how we get

to the 8th house calcuation.

My analysis showed me the way and was outlined in my email e.g count

and direction are based upon odd-footed and even footed rasis for

the direction of the count, yet it is not always counting 8 houses!

That is my point - Some times its 12 rasi's counter zodiacally (

example Taurus Lagna ariving at Gemini as the 8th house) or 12

houses from Leo arriving arriving at Cancer as the 8th.

So " decoding " the method brrings a better appreciation for the

approach.

So, Dual signs are 6 rasi's either forward or backward, Fixed are 12

signs ( forward or backward) and Movable can be 6 forward or

backword...the Odd-footed or even-footed determines the direction

[ try it].

Re: |Sri Varaha| Rudra/Maheshvara 8th house calculation

Hari Om

[ try it].

Dear Ajit,

yes I have read your excellent post 2X times and is helpful yet I do

not see the number of Rasi's for the count explained... I see

counter clockwise and forward motion, Yet when we look at the

patterns of the count they are different based upon movable, fixed

and dual.

That said, the key to unlocking the number of rasi as I understand

it is based upon Rasi ownership of Brahma ( movalble), Siva (fixed)

and Vishnu (dual).

Any insight on the " Mechanics " of this is warmly welcomed.

Dear Frank,

I have always counted exactly 8 houses, albeit from the previous rudra house

where possible. The point is that the calculation of Rudra is not derived

individually for each rasi. It is derived once for each _set_ of odd and

even footed houses.

Rudra for Ari is Sco (8th from Ari).

Rudra for Tau is Gem (8th from 8th from Ari).

Rudra for Gem is Cap (8th from 8th from 8th from Ari).

I am always counting exactly 8 houses.

The badhaka sthana is the 11th house....so why do we count 9/7 houses from

fixed/dual houses? Because the badhaka sthanas are calculated once for each

set of odd & even footed houses.

Dear Frank,

For Odd Footed signs count in forward and reverse for even footed.

AND If the Sign is Fixed (ruled by Rudra) then count from it's 7th

eight signs in reverse/forward. This gives the Vridha Karika table.

Warm Regards

Dear ajit

thank you for taking the time to have interest on this...

I guess my point REALLY was to understand how the eigth house

calculations worked and the model used.

Since the Rudra calculation was one use of the " Reckoner table " I

associated my posts with that... hense, in hindsight, not a good

path for the conversations.

I will look to your info " I have always counted exactly 8 houses,

albeit from the previous rudra house " and see how this helps me in

my understanding.

Dear Frank,

The 8th house reckoner in the Jaimini Sutras is to be used only for

finding the longevity compartment and not the rudra. For the rudra

calculation, the 8th house is always regular and zodiacal.

However the principles behind finding the 8th house as given in the

reckoner table is as follows:

1. The counting shall be zodiacal for odd-footed signs and

antizodiacal for even-footed sigs.

2. For Movable and Dual signs count the 8th sign, whereas for the

fixed signs, count the 2nd sign.

Now you derive the 8th house as per the vriddha's principles as

follows:

1. Aries: Odd-footed/ Movable- Count 8th sign in zodiacal order--

Scorio

2. Taurus- Odd-footed/ Fixed- Count 2nd in Zodiacal order-- Gemini

3. Gemini- Off-footed/ Dual- Count 8th in ZOdiacal order-- Capricorn

4. Cancer- Even-footed/ Movable- Count 8th in Antizodiacal order--

Sagittarius

5. Leo- Even-Footed/ Fixed- Count 2nd in antizodiacal order- Cancer

and so on.

Hope this helps.

Best Wishes

Sarajit

Dear Sarajit,

thank you for your note... yes this clarity of 8th house is of great

use. Is the " reckoner " used for other 8th house matters?

I listened to Sanjay on CD from one of the West Coast work shops and

he inferred 8th use ( from the reckoner) has other applications.

Dear Sarajit,

Narasimha's book (page 156) is clear about the use of the vriddha principles

for the calculation of rudra.

Rudra weilds a trishoola with 3 spears, and it is only logical that the

three-footed principle of dharma used to calculate the vriddas applies. Can

you please explain why a regular count to determine rudra is appropriate?

Re: |Sri Varaha| Rudra/Maheshvara 8th house calculation

|| Jaya Jagannath ||

Best Wishes

Sarajit

Dear Ajit,

I used to take the Vriddha Principle for Rudra/ Maheswara

Calculation previously, however when I got clear cut instructions

from Gurudev on its calculation, I always take it regular and

zodiacal.

Still I am searching for the probable reason, why should we be

taking the regular count. May Gurudev add few lines here.

You can also read his article on Longevity in JD or his website. You

might find some clue there!
