Guest guest
Dear Sarajit, Yes, the shloka leaves out the great Angirasa (Jupiter's father), Gautama, Ghaura, Shaktya, Daivodasi, Bhargava (Venus's father), Katya, Kaushika, Bharata, Gavisthira. Then what does one make of compound rishis like Jamadagni Bhargava or Purumilha Angirasa? Jamadagni was a powerful rishi and Parashurama's father but why was the name attached with Bhargava? What do these compound rishi names mean in the Rg? Maybe Ajit K of Seattle can help? Guest guest
... hamsasso.aham .. Dear Sarajit & Sarbani, The following seers revealed entire mandalas of the rig veda: Gritsamada (2nd Mandala), Vishvamitra (3rd mandala which includes the savitur & brihaspati gayatris), Vamadeva (4th), Atri (5th), Bharadwaja (6th) and Vasishtha (7th). There are some 100 different seers behind the rig veda, and the sloka quoted below is a quick salute to the " major " ones. When studying the particular part of the veda, that rishi is given a lot of importance. Each vedic shaka has their own version of the " major seers " . The " kanda rishi tarpanam " which is often used in Krishna Yajur Vedic rituals is a salute to the major rishis of the taittireya shaka of the yajur veda. These rishis will necessarily differ by veda and shaka. Sometimes, we find differences even between traditions belonging to the same vedic shaka. ajit Sarbani Sarkar [sarbani] Friday, June 25, 2004 4:51 AM varahamihira RE: |Sri Varaha| Seven Rishis of Rg Veda Dear Sarajit, Yes, the shloka leaves out the great Angirasa (Jupiter's father), Gautama, Ghaura, Shaktya, Daivodasi, Bhargava (Venus's father), Katya, Kaushika, Bharata, Gavisthira. Guest guest
... hamsasso.aham .. The Bhargavas are the descendants of Brighu. Jamadagni Bhargava is simply a way of saying " Jamadagni, descendant of Brighu " . These compound names are used to allow us to distinguish rishis who bore the same name. Purumilha Angirasa probably means " Purumilha, descendant of Angirasa " . Sometimes these compound names indicate a direct father-son relationship. " NAko Maudgalyah " in the Taittireya upanishad refers to " Naka, the son of Mudgala " . ajit Sarbani Sarkar [sarbani] Friday, June 25, 2004 4:51 AM varahamihira RE: |Sri Varaha| Seven Rishis of Rg Veda Dear Sarajit, Yes, the shloka leaves out the great Angirasa (Jupiter's father), Gautama, Ghaura, Shaktya, Daivodasi, Bhargava (Venus's father), Katya, Kaushika, Bharata, Gavisthira.
