I have been looking for some time, to see if it is possible

to connect ones chart back to the Seven Rishi's

( Marichi, Vasishta, Angiras, Atri, Pulasthya, Pulahu, and Kratu).

Reading a book this week by William L. Levacy suggests the

correlation with ones Nakshatra and one of the 7 Rishis.

I am trying to contact William to see the origin of this information.

Has anyone researched this?

I have been pursuing for some time and yet to find a answer from

reliable and documented sources ( Pandit, shastras, Joytishis), etc.

Any help is welcomed.

Namaste,

As per Srimad Bhagavatam, saptarshis(seven rishis) change in every

manwantara. Now it's the seventh manwantara running.

8th Skanda

7) Vaivasvata Manvantara: Kasyapa, Atri, Vasishta, Visvamitra,

Gautama, Jamadagni and Bharadwaja are the Saptarshis.

The same was discussed in another group. Aswathaama is going to be a

saparshi in the next manwantara with his yogic power.

I dont know how to connect one's gotra and nakshtra. As per my

thinking in every Gotra, there will be people born in different

nakshatras. Mine and my relatives nakshatras are different(or in some

cases same), though Gotram is same. Hence tracing Gotra from

nakshatra may not be possible.

Or r u talking something different? I look forward for your further

posts in this regard.

Best Regards,

Saaji

Hello Saaji

thank you for considering my post...

I will look up 8th Skanda and read.

According to the book I am reviewing by William L. Levacy,

he grouped the Nakshastras so they would be distributed to the 7

rishis. I did not find the pattern in the groupings ( 5,9th

combination, or some cycle; I am still reviewing).

I have pursued this question for some time in hopes a varga chart my

indicate the Gotra when unknnown. I would think a harmonic of the

12th varga ( Suryaamsa or Dwadasamsa) would give some clue.

I have also read and cannot recall the source, that if Gotra is not

known, Kasyapa welcomes you for his liniage. I have tried to re-

trace my steps on this info I read on-line to see if its traced back

to some authority.

Any case, thank you again; I will keep looking.

|| Om Gurave Namah ||

Dear Frank and Learned Members,

I think the topic of Gotra which is being loosely translated

as 'lineage' is more complex.

As my analysis goes, The word Gotra is combination of

'gotra' -> 'go' + 'tra'

I) 'go' the word 'go' can mean cow. But I think the word 'go' is from

'ga' (of gam, gacchati etc) which means 'moving' or 'going'.

so 'go' means 'goer' or one who has a 'gati'

II) 'tra' means 'protecting' (could also mean 'three')

so word indicates protection of movers. Or those protection of one

with gati. Similar meaning for 'go' can be seen from 'gochara' -

> 'go' + 'chara'

My understanding is that there could be 2 types of Gotra

A) Spiritual Lineage and B) Genetic Lineage or maybe lineage based

on profession or sustenance.

The ones refered to by the Sapta Rishi are spiritual lineage which

are only 7 and the genetic lineage we belong to are many this depends

and the caste and community one belongs to for example My own Gotra

Vachiar gotra which is not of the seven sapta rishi since this is

based on my community which is called 24 Manai (Manai in tamil is a

meansure of land) and this community itself have 24 Gotra's. You can

refer to http://www.24manai.com/24manai_history.asp for a brief story.

My understanding is that the Spiritual lineage is only 7 and is

maintained by the brahmins and spiritualists.

Your opinions are requested.

Warm Regards
